Midweek College Soccer Wrap

CollegeSoccer

There's plenty of entertaining college soccer action to catch up on this week, with upsets cropping up once again and Akron breaking their own attendance records last night.

Starting out in Ohio, where No. 1 Akron faced their biggest test of the year against No. 15 Ohio State. A record-setting crowd of 2,473 were on hand to watch the Zips record a comprehensive 3-0 win against the Buckeyes Wednesday night.

Akron grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half through a penalty from Blair Gaven would be enough as Akron's defense would limit Ohio State to one shot in the second half. Two more goals were added as the home side kept their unanimous No. 1 seed intact.

Elsewhere last night No. 23 Brown came from behind twice against No. 16 Boston University to grab a wild 3-3 draw. The Bears first came back from a 2-0 deficit, then after equalizing went down again 3-2, and once again clawed their way back for the tie.

Earlier in the week, No. 2 Maryland was upset by local rivals George Mason 2-0 despite having a man advantage, while other ACC upsets included No. 3 Wake Forest losing to No. 22 Charlotte 3-1 and Boston College lost to Siena 1-0.

What do you think of these college results? Can Akron go undefeated? Can anyone unseat them from the No. 1 spot?

  1. DJ, you are so sadly mistaken… UIC is a scrub team compared to the programs that Akron’s already played – Indiana, SMU, Ohio State… all three ranked in the top 15 at the time they played Akron, and not a one of them scored against the Zips. That team is legit…

  3. the Zips will fall and fall HARD to UIC come Wednesday the 7th. Their goalie has never seen this kind of ridicule and maybe we can make him cry like a couple goalies have.

I dare you to tell Sasho Cirovski that. 😛

But Maryland and Wake both going down? That’s rough for two good teams.

Akron has 4 road games in a row, so we’ll see how they perform. They could go undefeated.

  5. I too played college ball and comments like TRM’S show little respect to the guys busting there ass in preseason as well as three a day’s while staying on top of their studies.
FIFA rules would be great but until then…deal with it. Plus back in the day college soccer was the only thing on the tube, and that was usually just the semis and final……lots of tradition and rivalries out there that most mainstream America isnt aware of, packed little stadiums, consistent fan bases, solid play and guys actually playing with heart make it worthwhile for me .

  6. tons of our talent plays in college soccer at least for a few years, crazy to say that we shouldn’t care about it, i.e. Gooch, Charlie Davies, Feilhaber, Mo Edu, Stuart Holden among others

That is a ridiculous argument. Does NCAA basketball and football follow all NBA and NFL rules??? Their are major differences that I am sure you are aware of.
other examples of how college sports differ from pros.
Wrestling-different wrestling style completely…folkstyle vs freestyle
    baseball-aluminum bats vs wooden bats
tennis-sets and calling your own lines

College soccer doesnt have to be anything more then it already is.

That’s like saying no one should care about college (throw ball) because it’s not the NFL. I played in college soccer and %95 of the players know that there is not a professional future ahead. Any real American soccer fan should care about the NCAA purely for love of the game.

  9. Just because the NCAA is too stubborn to adopt FIFA rules doesn’t make college soccer not worth caring about. I was at the Wake game on Tuesday, and while it was a disappointing result, it had some good soccer.

I think we should care about NCAA until proper youth programs are established considering it prodcues players for MLS & MNT. Plus it’s just soccer news. These guys are trying hard and deserve credit for their efforts. Dreams have to have an outlet for realization. Pretty harsh my man. NIU Huskies!
