College Soccer: Conference Champions secure automatic tournament bids

CollegeSoccer

NCAA selection Monday is upon us, and it will be a nervy wait for some of the nation's collegiate soccer programs. The 48-team field will be announced tonight at 5:30pm (ESPNews), with the field already full of conference champion winners across the country.

University of Virginia claimed the ACC bid, with a 1-0 win against NC State on Sunday. UVA is one of the hottest team's in the nation, unbeaten in 11 games and didn't yield a goal during the three games in the tournament. The Cavaliers have eight clean sheets in a row and will be a headache for any other school in the tournament.

Joining UVA is Big East champion St. John's. The Red Storm beat Notre Dame 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw through regulation and two overtimes. No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Ohio State saw off the challenge from Penn State, winning 1-0 on a last-second goal in regulation. And maintaining a 100 percent record was Akron, as the Zips downed Hartwick 2-1 in the MAC tournament final.

Here's a complete list of conference tournament winners:

  • ACC – Virginia
  • American East – Stony Brook
  • Atlantic Sun – Stetson
  • Atlantic 10 – St. Louis
  • Big East – St. John's
  • Big Ten – Ohio State
  • Big South – Winthrop
  • Big West – UC Irvine
  • CAA – UNC Wilmington
  • CUSA – Tulsa
  • Horizon – Green Bay
  • MAAC – Loyola (Md.)
  • MAC – Akron
  • MVC – Drake
  • MPSF – Sacramento St
  • Northeast – Monmouth
  • Patriot League – Bucknell
  • Southern – Wofford
  • Summit League – Western Illinois

Some conferences around the country don't buy in to the conference tournament, with the regular season champion getting an automatic bid to the next round. Harvard and UCLA, winners of the Ivy League and the Pac 10 respectively, await their first opponent in tonight's selection show.

What did you think of the conference champions from over the weekend? Will UVA finally concede a goal? Is Akron the real deal?

  1. Ownby has been injured and only cleared to play 20 mins or so but he’ll likely be back in the starting lineup soon.

As for Agorsor, there were some questions regarding his eligibility earlier in the year and hasnt played at all thus far. Not sure what became of this though…

  2. …and last year Akron got hosed by having to go on the road.

Akron’s beaten everyone on their schedule, including conference champions Tulsa and Ohio State. It’s not like they’ve played cupcake city… if they’re not the #1 overall seed (and therefore playing at home up to the College Cup), the system is a sham.

  3. Does anyone know if Chris Agorsor is hurt (again)? Also – looks like Ownby got more playing time in the U20 WC than the ACC tournament – is he carrying an injury?

  4. look up the stony brook-umbc american east semifinal game on youtube, some of the most interesting penalty shoot-out goalkeeping i’ve ever seen…

  5. UVA is not stoppable and Akron still needs to prove itself! If I remember correctly they did not make it past the round of 16 last year even though they were highly touted!
