With the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida pouring heavy rains in Cary, North Carolina, the stage was set for upsets in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday. Two lower seeds knocked off higher seeds to set up a pair of semifinals few would have predicted.
North Carolina State had the upset of the day, knocking off No. 2 seed North Carolina in penalty kicks. After the team's played to a scoreless tie in regulation, NC State goalkeeper Chris Widman stepped up with two penalty saves and his own converted penalty kick to help give the No. 7 seed Wolfpack a stunning advantage. Alan Sanchez closed out the victory for NC State by converting his penalty to send NC State to the semifinals.
They will take on No. 3 seed Boston College, which defeated No. 6 seed Duke, 1-0. Edvin Worley's 96th-minute goal provided the difference.
The Game of the day matched No. 5 Virginia against No. 4 Maryland and while the defending NCAA and ACC champion Terrapins showed flashes of a team ready to repeat, they never could crack the Cavaliers defense. Virginia star Tony Tchani delivered the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to stun Maryland and push the Cavs to the semifinals.
Virginia will meet No. 1 seed Wake Forest, the only top seed to advance. The Demon Deacons cruised to a 3-0 victory against No. 9 seed Clemson on the strength of two goals from freshman Andy Lubahn.
Both semifinals will be played on Friday WakeMed Soccer Park. Both matches can be seen online at the ACC Championship website.
What do you think of these results? Shocked to see UNC and Maryland get knocked off? Think any of the underdogs can stop Wake Forest?

These tournaments are stupid. This isn’t basketball, where the tournaments where created to decide the lone school to make the NCAA tournament.
The NCAA/NSCAA should work together to terminate these conference tournaments, and expand the NCAA tournament – preferrably with regions, not home games.
I too believe the Terps are far from done! It could have been anyone’s game yesterday. Last year everyone had Wake winning both the ACC and the NCAA and everyone knows how that turned out. Wake has a great program but nothing is ever guaranteed! Go Terps!
you guys are all nuts if you think vidovich would have any interest in a bogus mls job. the job he has now is as good as it gets.
I’m a wahoo and a wolfpack…it was a great day for me!
often winning the ACC tourney you have to beat more good teams than to win the National Championship, I still have faith in my Terps to get it done
I believe Ownby is battling an injury and only saw minutes in the second half.
I’m just replying to Jaime above. I haven’t personally heard of any Vidovich to DCU rumors.
go hoos!
I think it’s fantastic.
Sucks to see the Terps knocked out of the ACC tournament. I haven’t seen one game this year so I don’t know much about their newbies. Cirovski will never leave there, he gets a couple top recruits each year and has a job for life. We love him to death, and he is dear to my heart ever since he gave me a replacement soccer camp FILA ball after I lost mine in 1999 at the UMD soccer camp.
Cirovski would be an excellent coach for United. Honestly, coach Cirovski would be an excellent coach nearly wherever he went.
Now, I’m not saying he should be offered the job… Or take it if he is offered the job.
GO ‘PACK!
I might have to take my son over to the game on Friday. Would’ve been nice to be there on Wednesday, but (1) the weather was crap, and I was staying out of it by (2) working late getting ready for a demo today.
Kyle, is United considering Vidovich or are you just speculating?
Go Pack!
Here’s to hoping that DCU does NOT take Jay Vidovich. We love the guy. What he’s done at Wake Forest has been nothing short of remarkable. The team has had consistent talent over the past several years and plays some exciting football.
Even this year, when we were “rebuilding,” we managed the top seed in the ACC tournament and a national #1 RPI for stretches of the season. Way to go, Jay Vidovich.
BC’s Edvin Worley – The Pride of Jensen Beach Florida!
Way to go big guy!
Now PLEASE GET YOUR US CITIZENSHIP!
how did everybody here’s favorite U-20 Brian Ownby do for Virginia?
Ives,
Just a heads up, BC was the #3 seed. They were favored against Duke.
(SBI-My mistake.)
Many in the dc area have been hyping Cirovski for the DCU job. Wish United would hand over the reigns to Jay Vidovich instead. Dud can effectively evaluate and recruit talent AND coach.
Let’s go Wake Forest!
Ike — silence the haters!
