Setanta Sports USA to cease operations

Setanta's loss is Fox Soccer Channel's gain.

Setanta announced Wednesday that it will be ceasing its broadcasting operations in the United States and Caribbean on Feb. 28 and that it will also be transferring many of its broadcasting rights to FSC effective March 1.

FSC will be launching its second channel, Fox Soccer Channel Plus, and will be broadcast in high definition the day after Setanta USA shuts down.

Setanta will continue to run its regularly scheduled programming in the USA and Caribbean through Feb. 28. The company's channel in Canada is not affected by the announcement.

What will you miss about Setanta Sports USA? Glad to see FSC taking bigger strides? Do you think this means more Proactiv commercials?

  1. like fsc as a channel but foxsoccer.tv is simply awful. Full screen lags, games don’t come on for hours and there’s no live view. Setanta I is superior in everyway.

  2. I get FSC and GolTV as part of a $10/mo sports tier on Comcast in Chicago. The sports tier includes a bunch of college sports channels and the MLB, NFL and NHL networks. Setanta is available but is a separate $15/mo subscription. If this FSC+ is added to the sports tier I will be sitting pretty.

  3. haha so wait, the UK and now the US…but don’t worry, Canda is not affected…

i seem to remember them saying something similar about the US channel after the UK version went down…i’m sure, though, the Canadian channel will be just fine! Nothing to worry about.

  4. Lets not forget the ever so classic penny talk ads. “Now I can call my bookie in Argentina for only two cents a minute!” 8-D

  5. I have had Setanta for a long time so that I can watch rugby. I fear that’s going away now, despite the quick mention of rugby in the list of broadcasts FSC was going to take over.

  6. I couldn’t agree more. For $15 a month I was virtually guaranteed to catch whatever EPL game I wanted along with FSC. Along with GOL TV I was in really good shape for the weekend to see Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue 1 and EPL. I am sad to see Setanta go. And right now it doesn’t look like Direct TV is offering the new FSC channel…yet

  7. not to mention the group of special channels DirecTV now has that show most of the Champions League and Europa Cup matches live.

  8. yeah youre right. the epl, uefa cl, spl, eredivisie, ligue 1, rpl, ccc, eufa wcq, conembol wcq, asian cl, and international friendlies have all been awful.

  10. Seems like I may be among the few who liked Setanta. Yes, I didn’t love paying $15, but I liked having all the extra matches, plus another channel, Setanta Xtra showing an additional live match on Saturday and Sunday. I liked having the opportunity to see almost all, if not all of the EPL matches each weekend. Plus I like the English and international rugby matches as well. And while I didn’t care for the puppets, I did like Football Matters, which was on last year.

If FSC+ is free-ish (comes with the sports pack on DirecTV), and has all or at least most of the content that Setanta has, then this is great. If it costs money and has similar content, then it’s a wash, and if it’s not free and has less than what Setanta has now, then it’ll be a loss overall for me.

  11. I pay and extra $23/month on DISH to go from the Bronze to the Gold package which is the only way to get FSC. This includes all sorts of crap channels that can’t have more than 10 viewers nationwide so I hope they just bundle FSC+ into the Gold package and be done with it..

  12. Well…this does not affect you then as if you did not get FSC..then you certainly did not get Setanta since it was $15 a month anyway… I just dont understand how $10-$15 a month makes people cringe… skip a meal or 2…

  13. What kind of lame crap is this? Setanta was always 15 dollars a month for me when I could get GolTV and FSC for 5 bucks…

    Setanta was awful and overpriced.

I often find this when I flip on the TV in a boozy state late at night. Maybe FSC Plus will create more options and fewer infomercials?

Any word on if La Liga would be broadcast stateside??

  15. Absolutely it’s my cable provider that’s pricing me out. It’s hard to justify paying the price they’re asking for their premium package.

If we want to see footy consistently reach a mainstream audience in this country, then it needs to be available. Making FSC part of basic cable would be a big 1st step.

  16. I agree. As a fellow dish subscriber, they will find any and every way to screw the soccer fan. First they took away Gol TV, and never replaced it with something worthwhile, then raised the pkg prices. ^%$^%$ Then now we are begging for channels like FSC HD and FSC + to be added, while you see crap like BET HD and WGN HD which never seem to have HD content on. Even when Comcast Sports HD shows soccer in HD (!!!) on cable systems and DirectTV, they don’t show them on dish due to “bandwidth.”

So why doesn’t dish go and screw the tennis and golf fans? Why the f*ck should soccer fans pay $15 to see a sport that is played EVERYWHERE and by EVERYONE. Drop tennis hd and golf hd and see how passionate those fans get. lol

  17. Interesting…I just checked the link baquito gave and they have Time Warner planning to make it available shortly after launch, whereas it tells me to tell Directv that I want it. I may have to switch back over to Time Warner. *shudders*

  18. Way to nut up, FSC. I’ll pay for HD broadcasts. I want it ALL in HD, though. All of it.

I want to see Torres’s hair flow and Friedel’s bald head glow in crystal clear HD.

  19. lol at the people cheering this news on…morons. less companies broadcasting football in this country is not a good thing. less competitions on tv is not a good thing.

    i really hope fsc+ is 15/month for u guys.

rip setanta…..true pioneer of football in the usa.

  20. http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/plus

has a link to an app that claims to be able tell you if FS+ is headed your way, although it does tell me I’m getting it which I’m not sure I believe.

It also gave me a local phone number to call for more information which immediately went to some guy named Carly’s voicemail. I left him a message part of which congratulated him on having his phone number distributed by some dubious web app.

  21. We’ll see how much FSC charges for the new channel. I normally didnt subscribe to Setanta – only for a month or two at a time. Even though I really enjoyed watching the Rugby World Cup in France a couple of years ago.

So I won’t miss Setanta that much. Unless Fox charges a massive amount for it.

  22. I can’t imagine this is going to be heavily distributed. FSC has existed in multiple forms for 12 years and still is only in 35MM households. GolTV is still only in about 15MM households… the demand just isn’t there to justify mass distribution given the lack of capacity.

  23. I’m on Dish and I’m sure FSC Plus will be $15 a month and I’ll still have to cancel my Setanta and add on FSC Plus. Dish will find a way to charge me for a full month of Setanta even though according to my billing date, it won’t be a full month. Complete BS how these soccer channels are priced.

On the other hand, we will get more Proactiv commercials and that commercial where the guy can “call all my friends in Canada for 1 cent a minute!”

  24. You can never get enough proactive commercials!

But seriously, it beats cilias ads during NFL games. I’d much rather hear about young girls with small acne problems then old men who can’t get it up.

  25. @Ives… what is the status of Setanta’s “closed” broadcast programming to pubs? Specifically SPL games, Celtic, Rangers etc… & Rugby?

  26. Dino1er, I have the same question – will DirecTv just roll over my $15/mo. from Sentanta to Fox HD? Is that what DirecTv is going to do – or do I cancel my Setanta? I need more info – where can I go

  27. Fox would do well to follow ESPN’s model and stream games that they have the rights to. They could do like ESPN360 and sell the service to ISPs or they could sell it directly to consumers for a minimal fee.

I can’t imagine the technology costs much and they would have quantifiable numbers to give their advertisers, plus whatever they are able to charge for the service.

  28. Meh. Where I live, FSC is only available as part of the platinum cable package. FSC is pricing itself out of the reach of a lot of middle-class soccer fans — a huge mistake — and until they change that, these changes won’t be noticed by millions of viewers.

  29. Good now I can get all the EPL games! Setanta isn’t in my area! And in HD!!!

Maybe I won’t be taking back that new surround sound….
