The UEFA Champions League draw wasn't the only notable news to come out of Monaco on Thursday. Also announced during the draw were the 2009-2010 UEFA Club Footballers of the Year awards, which champions Inter Milan swept. The voting panel consisted of the 16 coaches who reached the knockout stage of last season's Champions League.

The winners were:

GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR: Julio Cesar, Inter Milan
(Other nominees: Hugo Lloris, Lyon; Victor Valdes, Barcelona)

DEFENDER OF THE YEAR: Maicon, Inter Milan
(Other nominees: Lucio, Inter Milan; Gerard Pique, Barcelona)

MIDFIELDER OF THE YEAR: Wesley Sneijder, Inter Milan
(Other nominees: Arjen Robben, Bayern Munich; Xavi, Barcelona)

FORWARD OF THE YEAR: Diego Milito, Inter Milan
(Other nominees: Lionel Messi, Barcelona; Wayne Rooney, Manchester United)

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Diego Milito, Inter Milan

Disagree with any of the winners? Who do you think will capture the awards come next August?

  1. It’s not like any of the guys who won were undeserving, but it’s difficult to see how Xavi could lose for midfielder. Huge Lloris also came up big on many games for Lyon. Maybe he should have won for goalkeeper. I absolutely love Diego Milito, but Player of the Year seems a bit drastic.

  2. If someone on that team was going to win it, should have been Sneijder. Also, hard to imagine Milito was in front of Rooney, as he pretty much single handedly kept Man U competitive last season.

  3. I don’t get Milito winning, but Sneijder is fully deserving (and I say this as a HUGE Xavi fan). But Sneijder was instrumental in Inter’s semifinal victory over Barca. For me, Sneijder is 1-a and Xavi is 1-b.

But Inter won playing a fairly boring style, and they weren’t goalscoring machines, so Milito winning is totally a “give it to the best striker on the best team” award.

  4. milito has NEVER duplicated what he does @ club level, for the NT. i’m argentinian & been waiting for him to turn it on ever since he played for racing club in arg., but to no avail.for some reason some players just show a lot more in clubs.

  5. I find it weird that Diego Milito wins player of the year bu can barely get on the field for Argentina. Hey Argentina can’t you let the U.S. have a forward on loan for a little while.

  6. I think the decisions were fair. Julio Cesar was by far the best keeper in the world. How many games did he keep inter in last year during the Seire A challenge? Countless.

As for the defender, no question Maicon deserved the award. Other than Ca$hley Cole, who dominated a whole side of the field the way he did? In addition, to the # of goals he scored and assists? He literally provided a extra winger for inter. You had to plan to defend against him. While Lucio was solid and a lock down defender, Maicon provide contributed more to Inter’s offense while defending.

I’m give you Xavi, but not by much. While Messi could have made an argument for the crown, he faded too much in big games and its apparent in the WC and UEFA semi-final that you can Zone him out of the game. However Milito dominated play in every competition as well as provided assists. It is close, but you have to give it to the guy that score goals against Barca and Bayern Munich while basically playing as a lone forward. Which brings me to the most important aspect of Milito’s game – his ability to hold up the ball.

    BTW – i don’t like inter

  7. Besides the Messi snub, can you really argue against any of those selections? The other Inter winners are 100% deserving.

  8. No coach of the year? I would’ve thought Mourinho would be a shoe in for that one…

Hey, someone flip the sarcasm switch for me on the way out.

  9. hahahaha, this is a joke. I guess there is a definite advantage to winning the CL, to the point of blinding the voters / selection committee.

  10. I was hoping Lloris would have won. Also, agree that Xavi was deserving. Though it is pretty tough to argue against any winner.

  11. Why even have awards if you’re just gonna give it to the best players on the winning team. Xavi AND Robben were more deserving that Sneijder.
