While changes to CONCACAF's World Cup Qualifying format could keep the United States from facing Mexico on the men's side, the rivalry has reached a new level in the women's game.
Mexico pulled off arguably the biggest upset in women's soccer history on Friday night, recording a 2-1 victory against the United States that clinched a place in the 2011 Women's World Cup.
The Americans are left with the task of having to beat Costa Rica in a CONCACAF Third-Place game before taking on Italy in a two-game play-in series.
That road should be manageable for the defending Olympic champions, but then again so should have beating Mexico. The United States had beaten Mexico in their past four meetings by a combined score of 26-0. That was before Friday night.
What do you think of this upset? Do you see the U.S. women rebounding and clinching their place in the 2011 World Cup?

But if Laisa Andrioli actually played on Team Brazil…they would win by default. She played for the national team, but not a regular. Just google her name and case closed.
When you have Heather Mitts, Alex Morgan and Hope Solo…those three players alone are too hot for most national teams, except maybe Sweden….but the hot girls for Mexico…are the Mexican American girls.
Remember that most of them would not get to play at the international level otherwise. The system in the US on the womens side is very much based on how long you have been in the ODP system (a system that favors people from certain groups the way it is set up). Many players, especially those who develop later or those with less resources, don’t get a chance because of this and because the competition is so high. I’m sure many would love to play for the US if given the opportunity, though some would rather play for another country. It’s amazing how much of an impact the college system here has on global womens soccer.
Good for you. But not everyone feels the same way as you and they have the right to choose because of their dual citizenship.
Mexican Women’s Team, are much hotter than the American women’s team…
…or am i going in the wrong direction on this?
They have a bad tournament so you stop supporting your country? What an idiot!
I figured that the Mexican team with filled with American traitors that probably have not lived in Mexico one day. That is pure BS in my opinion. All my grandparents are from Mexico and my mother is as well, but I wouldn’t be caught dead in a Mexican National Team jersey. I was born and raised here and so I am American!
I feel ya, DaveW. You have to do a lot of digging to find this info because few people cover/research it. Even within the womens soccer community, there is ignorance (just look at FIFAs womens player of the year category, for instance) There’s so much interesting stuff going on in womens soccer globally – it has a unique position in world sports and continues to evolve quickly. I still believe that if more people covered it, there would be more interest. I suppose it’s a chicken and egg situation, really.
