UEFA Champions League: Your Running Commentary

ChampsLeague

For half of the teams in the UEFA Champions league, the group stage ends Tuesday afternoon, and knockout-stage implications are still on the line.

Tottenham, tied atop Group A with defending champion Inter Milan, could secure first place in the group with a victory against FC Twente. Considering Spurs' three-goal edge over Inter in goal differential, a win should do the trick barring an Inter rout of Werder Bremen.

Jermaine Jones' Schalke leads Group B and has already secured a place in the next stage, but a win over Benfica would clinch first place and a better knockout draw. Jones is not with the first team Tuesday after recently being demoted by coach Felix Magath. In Group C, Maurice Edu's Rangers, already guaranteed a third-place finish and a spot in the UEFA Europa League's Round of 32, is playing for pride against Bursaspor. Edu (knee injury) did not travel with the team to Turkey.

  1. It might have been unintentional, but in any case, it was a clear handball by the Kazan defender that deflected and then slow went across the goal line. It’s better to get a goal than a penalty, so I imagine the ref might have been playing advantage (but I had thought one side has to have possession of the ball to get advantage).

  2. So why didn’t play stop when the Rubin player touched the ball with his hand? Did the ref basically just play advantage and let the ball go into the net?

  3. Why does it seem that every match I watch with Manchester United playing, they are given more extra time than should be or is held up by the 4th official.

Slight example… here against Valencia, United was messing around with the ball in Valencia’s half… a good 20 seconds after the alloted time, and only when they finally had the ball taken away did the whistle blow.
