CONCACAF U-20s: USA vs. Guatemala (Match Night Commentary)

Ussoccerlogo

One game, one ticket to the Under-20 World Cup.

Those are the stakes tonight as the United States takes on Guatemala tonight in the U.S. Under-20 CONCACAF quarterfinals in Guatemala (10pm, ESPN3.com/ESPN Deportes). Beat the host team tonight and the Americans punch their ticket to the Under-20 World Cup on Colombia this summer.

The Americans are heavily favored tonight, but anything is possible in regional competition. The United States will need its high-powered attack to keep scoring goals and put the match out of reach for the Chapines.

SBI will be providing commentary on tonight's match so please feel free to follow along. As always, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):

  1. Cheating? Who said anything about cheating? I simply said they are a disgrace, you should learn to read and process information a little more clearly. You sound like a headstrong, impulsive Yankee fan. I may have just found my arch-enemy.

  2. There is NOTHING I hate more than when a player from Central or South America does a backheel or some other attention getting move that sends the crowd into an instant uproar. These plays usually don’t unlock the defense and just look cool, I guess doing things that look cool are more valued than doing things that produce real results.

  3. What are you, 10? The team with the lead may take their time on set pieces. Complaining that the other side cheated is for weaklings and Red Sox fans.

  4. Umm, not really. 20 mins of gametime translates to 15 mins of Guatemalan players being an utter disgrace on the ground. 5 mins of actual football.

  5. Don’t know if anybody is watching the “Englsih” concacaf broadcast. Hilarious. It’s Gareth from the original “Office” randomly saying this like, “he done well there then” and referencing “the kosh” and just remaining quiet for long, long stretches. Plus the endless replays of the US goal while Guatemala scores off camera? Too funny.
I know I could look this up, but…if US loses, they’re not in the U20 WC?

  6. Wow, great defending guys. Our CBs looked like they were playing RB and LB on that play. Wake me up when this is over someone.

  8. I understand that this is our U20 team, but I’m still concerned that long-ball plays such a prominent role in buildup out of the backfield.

  10. I actually think Gulati has done a good job at everything regarding US soccer. My complaint is that he rolls over when it comes to all the ref rigging and corruption within world football.

  11. Isn’t it called CONCACAF which is comprised of North America, Central America and the Caribbean? Newsflash: Central America is part of the NORTH AMERICAN continent. South America has its own confederation, namely CONMEBOL.
