De Rosario included on Canada Gold Cup roster

After all that chatter, Dwayne De Rosario will be representing Canada this summer.

The New York Red Bulls midfielder highlights manager Stephen Hart's roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, along with five other MLS players. Attacking talent Simeon Jackson, who spearheaded Norwich City's promotion to the English Premier League also made the cut for Canada, which will open the Gold Cup against the United States on June 7 in Detroit.

De Rosario was at the center of a club-vs.-country debate after Red Bulls manager Hans Backe told reporters that his player was going to skip the Gold Cup and stay with the club through the tournament. Hart dispelled those notions, and De Rosario had since reiterated his wish to represent his country.

Here is Canada's 23-man roster for the Gold Cup:

CANADA GOLD CUP ROSTER

GOALKEEPERS – Lars Hischfeld (Valerenga), Milan Borjan (FK Rad), Haidar Al-Shaibani (Nimes Olympique).

DEFENDERS – Kevin McKenna (FC Cologne), Dejan Jakovic (D.C. United), Andre Hainault (Houston Dynamo), Jaime Peters (Ipswich Town), Nik Ledgerwood (SV Wehen Wiesbaden), Mike Klukowski (Unattached).

MIDFIELDERS – Dwayne De Rosario (New York Red Bulls), Julian de Guzman (Toronto FC), Terry Dunfield (Vancouver Whitecaps), Will Johnson (Real Salt Lake), Atiba Hutchinson (PSV Eindhoven), Pedro Pacheco (CD Santa Clara), Josh Simpson (Vestel Manisaspor), Tosaint Ricketts (FC Politehnica Timipoara), Marcel de Jong (FC Augsburg), Jonathan Bealieu-Bourgault (SC Preuben Munster), Issey Nakajima-Farran (AC Horsens).

The Canadians face Ecuador at BMO Field on June 1 in a pre-Gold Cup friendly prior to facing the U.S. national team.

  1. Are you kidding me???
You know exactly what the original poster is trying achieve with his comment…
    It’s a regular who’s-who of “who?”

It has NOTHING to do with not knowing anything about Canadian soccer. You can find similar comments in every report about something Canadian soccer-related on this site.

    You’re telling me you don’t know…
    DeRo
    Julian De Guzman
    Andre Hainault
    Dejan Jakovic
Simeon Jackson (who scored the game winner to secure Norwich’s return to the EPL)
(just to name a few of the bigger-name players)

Reason?…I don’t go making sly comments about other national teams I don’t know anything about.

  2. I remember hearing on I think an FSC broadcast that he changed the spelling from Andrew to Andre but that it’s still pronounced Andrew. It seemed a little weird, but who knows.

  3. Marcel de Jong is a fullback/left midfielder who plays for FC Augsburg. They just got promoted to the Bundesliga, and he played about 27 games this season for them, with 3 goals.

  4. Sutton is older (34), and essentially done with the CMNT. Hirschfeld (32) is in his prime, playing regularly in Norway. Borjan is young (23), playing regulary in Serbia, where they have locked up 4th (and thus in a Europa league spot), including 6 clean sheets in a 30-game season. Al-Shaibani (27) doesn’t play quite as often in France, but they are in the 2nd level in France – sort of a step up from a guy who has only played 4 games since he signed with the Red Bulls over a year ago.

CD Santa Clara is Portuguese 2nd division

Politechnica Timisoara finished 2nd in Romania and qualified for Champions League

Wehen Wiesbaden is in the German 3rd tier

Preuben Munster is in the German 4th tier

FK Rad is in the Serbian first division.

  6. I figure you just took the list from an official press release, but it would be helpful if these clubs had countries and possibly divisions next to them.

Without seemingly like a snob.. I honestly haven’t heard of most of those clubs..

  7. He had a hat trick in April that won a game and scored some other big goals but then again Henri Lansbury came on loan and won a few key games for them back in January & February and those games were just as important as any in April. Jackson hardly featured from October to April.

Point being, Norwich were extremely solid over the course of 46 games & Grant Holt is Norwich’s talisman (& captain) and I would say he of all the Norwich players spearheaded their promotion campaign.

  8. They have a strong midfield, but everything else is mediocre. None of the forwards are scary, and the defense and goalies are even less imposing. Hutchinson may get paired with McKenna on D, wich would weaken the midfield as well.

  9. obviously 2/3rds of the crowd at US v Canada in Detroit will be canadian. dont count on US topping the group

  10. they should have a one-time switch ability, but on an unannounced day for anyone under 23. Maybe the young guys regret their decision. Would like to have G. Rossi back.

  11. I’ve heard that rumor bounced around before, and I hope it’s true because he’d be a nice addition (probably instantly our best striker) but Brian Sciaretta at Yanks Abroad reportedly talked to his agent/father and he said the US is not a possibility. I think it’s all conjecture at this point. Jr is trying to play for the best team he can (I believe he’s England eligible too) and I’d welcome him if he landed in our laps.

  12. Heaven forbid we don’t know anything about a team that isn’t ours! I’m sure you’re all over the Guadeloupe starting 11 right? And know every player on the Panama 23 man squad? Right? You’re not an ignorant Canuck?

  13. I was going to laugh that a player without a club was still on Canada’s roster, but that guy, Mike Klukowski, had a falling out with his club and was released in april. So not as funny as I thought, but the tournament could be a nice audition for him to find a new club.

  14. Probably being pedantic but while Jackson scored some key goals for Norwich, he wasn’t even a full time starter, so I think spear-heading is a bit of an overstatement. I’d say Grant Holt spearheaded their promotion run.

Jackson is a good player though.

  15. Was expecting more players to be named to Gold Cup Squad from TFC… is everyone else surprised, or am i a victim of paying more attention to local players that those overseas… i thought the Gold Cup was to have a serious impact on our roster, it doesn’t at all.
    (from a Cdn team perspective).
Anyone have an opinion on how many others from TFC will go to Gold Cup representing other countries?

  16. And same with Daniel Fernandes who will most likely never play a meaningful game for Portgual but probably would be Canada’s #1 right now.

  17. Younger JDG probably regrets his decision at this point, he hasn’t been on the Dutch NT radar for a couple years now.

  18. Why no Adrian Cann? He’s a Canadian citizen and one of MLS’s best defenders.

(SBI-There was a period in the first half of last year when Adrian Cann was rock solid, but that form hasn’t been seen in a good while. And one of the best MLS defenders? He’d be pretty much closer to middle of the pack for centerbacks, if not lower middle.)

  19. wasnt meant as a knock…just a surprise. I was surprised Sutton didnt make it. He has been solid for NYRB this year when he has played.

  20. Disappointing. He might have been Blackburn’s best attacking player this season, and would have been one of the best players in this tournament.

  21. You haven’t heard of some of those clubs b/c some of those guys go to smaller clubs to develop. Then they move on to a bigger club.

Unlike the Adu/Altidore/E.Johnson’s who go straight to big clubs and then bounce around from club to club on loan and never settle anywhere.

  22. the US will be at RFK as long as they finish 1st or 2nd in their group, so you’ll be all set. i got my tickets too.

  23. Jackson, Friend and Gerba are all forwards, you can also consider DeRo and Josh Simpson as forwards, even Ricketts and Nakajima-Farren are Wingers

  24. what do you mean all that chatter

    Backe said DeRo wasn’t going
Hart said he hadn’t heard that
DeRo said he wanted to go

    end of story

all that chatter give me a break

  25. The core group of guys is solid, but then again it usually is. Canada however, always seems destined to be just on the edge of becoming a tough team to beat.

We better top this group as I already have my RFK tickets assuming the US is winning the group!!!

  26. Who is Marcel de Jong?

Assessment. Solid CONACAF side, but depth? I think they’ll score some goals. Gerba is usually a pleasant surprise in a couple of games every year– useless at other times. Which one shows up will be important.

Jackson could be one of the better strikers in the tournament.
