Livestrong Sporting Park, the newest soccer stadium in Major League Soccer, makes its debut tonight when Sporting Kansas City plays host to the Chicago Fire.

The $200 million facility is already receiving rave reviews and is being called, by some, as the best stadium in MLS.

Here is a look at Sporting Kansas City's new home:

  1. My favorite aspect is probably the most low-tech of them all…the terraces in the East End. Nice.

Getting married on August 20th in KC, and will be flying in on the 17th for the SKC vs. Timbers game. My first MLS League Match (saw the Burn and MetroStars play Silverbacks way back in the day).

    Can’t wait!

  2. Yeah, I think the media are overblowing the whole “only 28,000” in Detroit thing.

First, it was a Tuesday night, so Tampa will do better on a Saturday. And KC has the whole new stadium thing.

Second, Concacaf totally overrated how many Canadians would attend. No more than 4,000 of that crowd was Canuck. So that means 23-24,000 of that crowd was pro-American — and the US would have taken that easily for a GC group game 5 years ago, so at least we’re seeing progress in expectations.

For a Tuesday night, with a lousy undercard match (even Honduras and Jamaica bring in a few fans…), I think 30,000 was a reasonable target, with 35,000 probably being the ceiling for this event. 28,000 is just a touch below expectations.

And for those in the media saying the game should’ve been played in a smaller stadium, remember that crowd wouldn’t have fit in, say, the Home Depot Center….

  3. One or two people will always hang on to silly things like that because they think it makes them more hardcore than everyone else.

  4. Stadium looks great. I just hope they can fill seats. With such a dismal record, SKC needs all the support they can get.

  5. As a not biased fan I think the stadium with the best setting is RioT, with the mountains magnificently displayed in the background. Although if your from Salt Lake I’m sure the mountains will not be that significant since they can be viewed all over Salt Lake

  6. Concacaf was hoping more Canadians would come across the border. I am guessing they didn’t play in Seattle because there was a U2 concert on Saturday night which wouldn’t have allowed for the grass to be installed. If it had there would have been more people, because Portland, Seattle and Vancouver fans would have all shown up.

  7. As a Seattle fan Portland field of the new ones is clearly the worst, because of the size. If you look at pictures of Sporting field and Portland’s the width isn’t even close.

I will say Portland did what they needed to do to get a team and they have built a team that plays well on their field. As we have seen that same team is going to struggle on the larger fields.

  8. not this year it doesn’t. The first year they botched the grass job, and it never took. This year it looks like an absolute carpet.

  10. Great looking stadium. I know I am biased as a Union fan, but PPL Park is the best and most beautiful SSS in the US and Canada. It’s on the waterfront and it’s at the foot of the Commodore Barry Bridge. It is such a beautiful setting. During games, you can see huge cargo ships float past the stadium, while tiny matchobx trucks and cars drive overhead on the bridge.

  11. this guys over-enthusiasm makes me want to punch him in the face.

the plaza and stadium facade is beautiful! definately beats RBA in that respect. the inside doesnt feel as nice though. feels a lot smaller too. the upper portion feels unfinished. maybe its left that way for future expansion?

    looks awesome KC well deserved!

  12. Well, don’t I look stupid? I should be used to it by now. Perhaps what I mean is, we should use stadiums like this more frequently instead of places like Detroit.

  13. Love this.

The Fire are being extinguished. Which reminds me that I missed a great opportunity to make a remark about flopping fishes extinguishing the Fire’s playoff chances when Carlos “pescadito” Ruiz scored that ridiculous left foot volley.

  14. As backwards as it sounds, you would actually be doing us a favor.

In fact, make it embarrassing. Slugging administrators require large incidents to change direction and policy.

And I can justify it for myself by claiming that the MLS fan in me wants to see SKC win big at the home opener to boost fan morale.

Kidding, I don’t need to justify for myself. 🙂

3 of them aren’t in the cities the team is named after…. 1 of them is

  16. Dear Portland,

    Now THAT’S how you build a soccer-specific stadium….

Sincerely, the rest of the league

Seriously, the past two seasons have introduced Red Bull Arena, PPL in Philly, and now Livestrong in KC — world class (and full-size) facilities. Then there’s the minor-league bandbox of Jeld-Wen.

    (Cue the Sesame Street Music.)

One of these fields is not like the other ones…. One of these fields just doesn’t belong….

  17. The stadium looks awesome. I could have really have done without the world’s most annoying pratt showing us the stadium. He just might be the fakest person I have ever had the pleasure of listening to speak.

  18. Looks gorgeous with more character than NY’s. Almost classic.

As a DC fan, there’s no limit to my (and I’m sure the rest of the fans’) envy….

    One day… One day…. In Baltimore : (

  19. As a RB fan, I can tell you it increases the experience 10 fold having the stadium. So congrats!

RBA’s roof I think would likely hold more noise than they have here, but that might be it’s biggest advantage over this…which looks really really nice.

  20. The video is cool but it doesn’t begin to tell the story. The facilities on the inside are amazing. The different clubs and suites along with the members club and the locker rooms. The locker rooms are incredible with top of the line video equipment built in to each and every seat in front of a locker to help with strategy and break down for preperation and at halftime.

  21. Congrats to KC fans on getting your own place. Looks great.

As a Red Bull fan, I can tell you it’s pretty awesome to have a place to call home.

  22. Would love to see KC have a USMNT game. In fact, I would rather have a packed stadium of 20,000 American fans than a half empty crowd of 30,000.
