It took Wil Trapp five games in his first season as a professional with the Columbus Crew to record a point, but he couldn’t have picked a much better evening to do so.
Trapp found a streaking Federico Higuain down the right flank with a perfect through ball before Higuain sent in a top-notch goal to finish off the New York Red Bulls, 2-0. Trapp’s assist and 90-minute performance made him the choice for SBI MLS Rookie of the Week.
Trapp beat out Toronto FC’s Jonathan Osorio, Colorado’s Dillon Powers and Seattle’s defender DeAndre Yedlin for this week’s honor.
What did you think of Trapp’s performance? Which rookie stood out to you in MLS Week 24?

Wil Trapp is a truly gifted player. Hopefully the Crew can hold onto him long term.
I’ve watched Trapp throughout his whole career back to his academy days. He represents what the US should be doing with football. Smart, technical, and simple. Class is permanent…
Dutch, I think you’re selling him a little short with “simple.” Trapp is smart, technical, and as the set up for Higuain shows, decisive when it is the right play. Lots of guys can connect dots and play simple. Not a lot of guys can play penetrating passes that break the lines or spring guys in behind. Circulating passes around the back line and sprayed out wide require technique and decision making, but class is being able to play direct, killer passes at the right moments. He’s showing some glimpses of potential.
Some rookie mistakes but great performance. He needs to put on a few pounds though…he really struggled to slow down Steele.
First time seeing him in person, he played so well. Broke up a ton of attacks, moved the ball well, and was always making himself available, not much more you could ask for in that position. I hope to see him start throughout the rest of the season, given that O’Rourke, Sanchez, and George have not been able to stake their claim on the position.
Trapp is class. He understands how to play the D-Mid role. Reminds me a better version of Brian Carroll. Not flashy, but he always makes the right play.
