For Chivas USA, it seems like where there’s El Cubo, there’s a way.

For the third straight match in as many weeks, it was Erick Torres — otherwise known as El Cubo — who scored to give Chivas USA the edge for a 1-0 victory.

This time, it was against the Montreal Impact. And this time, it was in dramatic fashion as Torres shocked the Impact defense with an acrobatic bike kick in the dying moments of deep stoppage time. It was Torres’ 12th goal on the season and a splendid one at that.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time Saturday with the match looking headed for a draw, Torres intercepted a blocked shot that popped up on his foot and, with his back turned to goal, fired a bicycle near post into the right upper 90. For a small home crowd of around 4,200, it was a special treat to cap off a suspenseful deadlock.

It was a fairly even match possession-wise between two struggling teams, with Chivas taking 11 shots to Impact’s eight. Impact maintained more of the possession early, but scoring chances were few in the first half.

The pace picked up in the second half as both sides pushed to find the net, although neither goalkeeper was really tested. With the result, Chivas’ goalkeeper Dan Kennedy earns his third consecutive shutout.

The win extends Chivas’ unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer play to four matches as they hold onto their lowly Western Conference table spot above only the San Jose Earthquakes. Next Saturday, they head to Vancouver to face the Whitecaps.

The Impact remain the bottom-dwellers of the Eastern Conference table, unable to hold onto any momentum from their whooping of the Houston Dynamo last week. Next Saturday, they host Sporting Kansas City.
