The Colorado Rapids left Sporting Park Wednesday night with the home team in shock. Sporting Kansas City squandered the chance to lock up a playoff position against the Rapids, the Western Conference’s bottom-dweller, in a 2-0 loss.
Dillon Powers scored the first goal of the match, a clever chip of Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia after a speedy counterattack in the 78th minute. Dominique Badji slid the ball across the field to Powers to put him one-on-one with Melia.
In the 84th minute, Rapids midfielder Sam Cronin was shown a red card. But Sporting still count not force the comeback. Marcelo Sarvas scored the second goal for the Rapids in the 86th minute to seal the win. Sarvas’s goal was scored on another counter attack in which Sporting’s entire defense was out of position after a set piece on the other end.
The Rapids’ first goal came directly after Sporting’s best chances at scoring.
In the 71st minute Graham Zusi sent a shot off the crossbar. Zusi dribbled in on Colorado goalkeeper Zac MacMath after a Paulo Nagamura pass split two Rapids defenders.
Sporting really began to threaten to score after Zusi’s chance. In the next few minutes, both Soni Mustivar and Krisztian Nemeth sent volleys wide of the goal. Mustivar’s came off a deflected free kick and Nemeth’s try came at the back post from an in-swinging cross.
With the loss, Sporting will have to hope the San Jose Earthquakes cannot upset FC Dallas over the weekend, or else Sporting will be on the outside looking in heading into the last game of the season, against the LA Galaxy on Sunday, Oct. 25.
The last time the Colorado Rapids recorded a win was against the same team, a 2-1 win over Sporting KC in Colorado on Aug. 29. With Real Salt Lake four points ahead, Colorado remains without hope to finish above last in the West heading into the last weekend of the regular season.
