  2. I disagree with Ives on his views of the u17 age group, especially around judging the importance of these competitions/cycles based on the number of players that make it to the full mens national team. These competitions happen every 2 years. Mexico has been benefiting from their investments in this age group. Having 3-4 players come through every 2 years and doing well is a good/great return on investment.
Ives gives the example of the 2005 Mexico team. Today, Hector Moreno, Gio Dos Santos, and Carlos Vela came out of that group. The 2011 team provided Marco Bueno, Carlos Fierro, Antonio Briseño, Arturo Gonzalez, Carlos Guzman and Julio Gomez, all playing in the top flight or liga de ascenso. The 2013 team offered Raul Gudiño, Erick Aguirre, Ulises Rivas and Christian Tovar.
All this to say that if you get a few solid players, who then play the u20 and the u23, add to that the players who weren’t on the u17 radars during their respective cycles, you start to build a good depth chart across the board. There is no way that all 23 players or even 11 starters will be stars. But if every two years, TWO YEARS, you have a constantly successful core group of 3-4 players moving through the pipeline, the full mens will benefit.
Add the increasing exporting of players (see Porto’s statement that they will continue to invest in Mexican players) and I predict there being more and more players in top leagues and a deeper depth chart. All of that is good and shows that these are worthwhile investments and cycles to keep tabs of.
