Revs pick up contract options for Nguyen, Rowe, 12 others

MLS: Playoffs-New England Revolution at Columbus Crew

The New England Revolution have exercised their club options on 14 players for the 2016 season.

The club announced on Wednesday that it is bringing back goalkeeper Brad Knighton; defenders Darrius Barnes, Andrew Farrell, Jose Goncalves, Donnie Smith, Chris Tierney, London Woodberry; midfielders Teal Bunbury, Scott Caldwell, Diego Fagundez, Lee Nguyen, Kelyn Rowe, and forwards Charlie Davies and Sean Okoli.

The group will join the likes of Daigo Kobayashi, Bobby Shuttleworth, Zachary Herivaux and Juan Agudelo to compose New England’s temporary roster for the next season. Kobayashi was inked to a new deal while the other three were already under contract.

Those whose team options weren’t picked up include goalkeeper Trever Spangenberg, defenders Kevin Alston and Jeremy Hall, and midfielders Timi Mulgrew, Steve Neumann and Tyler Rudy. Midfielders Andy Dorman and Jermaine Jones, meanwhile, saw both of their contracts expire at the end of the 2015 season.

Per league rules, New England has until Dec. 10 to re-sign any re-entry draft eligible players, including those who were not picked up via the club option.

  1. Resigning JJ is critical for NE. I don’t know what the front office is doing on this and they seem to be dragging their feet. He wants 3 years and I doubt they want to sign him for that long.. I believe the general feeling is that he will be gone next year and nobody will brought in to replace him. This has been the case when players start to get expensive. The Revs front office has a long history of being very CHEAP and Jones is not cheap by any means. They also have a long history of not being able to find and sign quality players that are ready to step up and contribute immediately. Instead, they sign a lot of cast offs that haven’t worked out.

  2. Can someone familiar with NE provide feedback? That possible starting lineup with JJ included, looks as potent, or potentially so, as any in MLS, what went wrong this year?

  3. two thoughts…

    1. How much of a dissapointment has J. Hall’s career in MLS been? Dude went from starring in MLS/adidas commercials to getting cut from like his 4th team. Sheesh!

    2. This team can compete for the title if they get JJ90 back and KEEP PEOPLE HEALTHY for a full season.

even if they don’t get JJ back could Kellen slide into the middle and link the attack to get Diego on the left and Teal on the right.

Maybe it’s time to get into a diamond 4-4-2 to get CD9 and Swagudelo onto the field at the same time.
