Clint Dempsey remains in pursuit of Landon Donovan’s all-time U.S. Men’s National Team scoring record, but Dempsey could level Donovan in another area that yields a significant piece of hardware.
Dempsey is one of five nominees for the 2015 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year award, which will be unveiled on Friday. Joining Dempsey on the list of nominees are Michael Bradley, Brad Guzan, Fabian Johnson, and DeAndre Yedlin.
The nomination could see Dempsey recognized with his fourth Male Player of the Year award, a mark that would see the Seattle Sounders forward match Donovan’s tally. Bradley, meanwhile, is looking for his first win following three prior nominations, while Johnson earns his second consecutive nomination.
Yedlin is among the nominees just one year after claiming the U.S. Soccer Young Male Player of the Year award, which will announce its latest winner on Friday. Headlining those shortlisted for that accolade are two returning nominees, Emerson Hyndman and Christian Pulisic, as well as Cameron Carter-Vickers, Matt Miazga, and Gedion Zelalem.
What do you think of the nominees for Male Player and Young Male Player of the Year? Any snubs? Who do you see as favorites to take home the awards?

What does it say about us soccer that a guy like yedlin is in a country’s top 5….
I have no idea why Bradley is even in there
Have to go with Dempsey because of Golden Boot at the Gold Cup, and perhaps the only reason we weren’t just knocked out at the group stage.
Also I’m not sure what it would say if Fabian won it after the whole perhaps pulling him self and being called out by his manager thing.
is that any worse than the ref incident Dempsey was a part of? seems to me the ref thing was much worse and really makes you wonder if he should even be nominated.
Tough year to come up with nominees. Dempsey was asked to score goals in the gold cup and he did that. F Johnson is on a tear in Europe right now. Jozy’s play was better for the USMNT, though it didn’t result in wins. That’s about all I’ve got.
CCV and Miazga were the standouts from the U23 team when I watched them play.
No one really stood out for me in 2015 except for Dempsey and FJ. Dempsey won the Golden Boot in the Gold Cup, so, for that reason I would go with him. For young male player I see it between Pulisic and Miazga off their performances with their youth teams. Given Miazga’s good year with the Red Bulls, he would be my choice.
I’m surprised Landon Donovan isn’t nominated.
They’ll create some award named after him soon.
Landon Donovan Courage to stay in MLS Award.
Landon Donovan Return to Excellence after Vacation Award.
Landon Donovan Humanitarian Relief for Urination on a pitch Award.
None of the five. Leave it blank this year. YPotY = Miazga
Why isn’t Morris nominated for Young Male Player of the Year award? Heck I would have been ok if he was a nominee for Male Player of the Year award over Yedlin and Guzan.
Zardes should have also been a nominee for Male Player of the Year? I think he might have played the most games in 2015 of any US player.
NVM about Morris of Young Male Player award, he is 21. I would still rather him be a nominee for Male Player of the Year over Yedlin and Guzan.
Even though those guys play in the premier league and Morris plays amateur soccer against future lawyers and dentists?
All of these players had sizable individual disappointments in their 2015 US soccer years. I guess Fabjo should win.
Sorry, but some of these nominees are only there b/c they needed five players. FJ is currently our best player, but I can see Demps winning the award.
Agreed. I am hoping FJ gets it, but like you said, Dempsey will probably get it. Aside from the Gold Cup, I don’t think he was at the top of his game. Some injuries, getting older, and of course his little referee incident. Guzan didn’t have the impact I was hoping for and had that over the line gaffe that stands out quite a bit. Bradley just wasn’t good with the exception of earlier in the year during some friendlies. Yedlin is moving his way up, but not quite deserving of the POTY just yet, although if he continues to play for Sunderland/Tottenham, I could certainly see him getting the award sooner than later.
