MLS Ticker: Bolanos, Earthquakes, U.S. Open Cup, and more

The Vancouver Whitecaps have reportedly signed a Costa Rican international, the San Jose Earthquakes made a couple of signings, and more:

Christian Bolanos may soon be the next Costa Rican to don the Vancouver Whitecaps’ jersey, and an official announcement is expected some time this week. Capped 60 times by the Ticos, the 31-year-old winger will reportedly make the move on a free transfer from Deportivo Saprissa. (REPORT)

The San Jose Earthquakes announced new contracts for forward Quincy Amarikwa and 33-year-old defender Jordan Stewart on Thursday. After originally being drafted by the Earthquakes in 2009, Amarikwa will compete in his fourth season for the club in 2016. (REPORT)

U.S. Soccer officially announced that USL teams that are majority owned by MLS clubs cannot compete in the U.S. Open Cup. (REPORT)

Orlando City revealed its pro academy director, Darren Powell, will officially join the latest USL expansion franchise in San Antonio, Texas, as head coach. The USL team will begin play in 2016. (REPORT)

Gonzalo Pineda has called it quits, announcing his retirement after spending the last two seasons with the Seattle Sounders. The 33-year-old hangs them up after appearing in 56 regular-season games for the club. (REPORT)

  1. How does the new USOC rule compare with rules in other countries? Plenty of clubs in Europe field “B” teams in lower divisions, don’t they?

    • Seriously, this just seem like a scheduling issue. I see the conflict of interest, but just make it so the two clubs are in opposite divisions. Doesn’t seem that hard to work around considering the amount of fans they are leaving out…

      • I vaguely remember it had something to do with some of those “B” teams not using some of their better players because the parent club didn’t want them cup-tied if they needed them later on in the competition due to injuries, etc.
