Klinsmann to hold talks with Howard, Guzan before naming USMNT starter

USMNT-Howard-Guzan

MIAMI – Since Tim Howard’s return to the U.S. Men’s National team picture, Jurgen Klinsmann has yet to truly name a starting goalkeeper. With Copa America just weeks away, Klinsmann now has a decision on his hands, although the USMNT manager has left things up in the air for the time being.

“We’ll have good talks over the next couple of days with Brad and Tim,” Klinsmann said on Tuesday, “and then I’ll let you know more.”

Following an extended break away from the national team, Howard returned to the USMNT picture in the aftermath of last summer’s Gold Cup. Waiting for him was a now-incumbent Brad Guzan, who had seized the starting gig in the absence of the longtime veteran.

In the matches since, Guzan has started five times while Howard has earned three appearances in net. In the USMNT’s most recent matches, a pair of crucial World Cup qualifiers with Guatemala, Howard started the panic-inducing defeat in Central America before Guzan stepped in for a 4-0 win in Columbus.

Prior to Copa America, the USMNT faces three friendlies, the first of which comes on Sunday against Puerto Rico. Howard, Guzan and the U.S. will then take on Ecuador and Bolivia before kicking off Copa America on June 3 against Colombia.

What do you think of Klinsmann’s comment? Who do you expect to start in goal for the USMNT against Colombia?

  1. Well, seeing as Guzan is a dead ringer for Dr. Evil, there’s no doubt that Howard will end up as Number 2.
