The New York Red Bulls made an emphatic statement on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium against in-state rival New York City FC.
The Red Bulls thrashed NYCFC 7-0 in the Hudson River Derby and climbed to third place in the Eastern Conference standings, earning them SBI MLS Team of the Week honors.
The Red Bulls dominated the game from the beginning, with Dax McCarty scoring just three minutes into the match. They never looked back from there. Bradley Wright-Phillips scored two goals in the final five minutes of the half to put the Red Bulls ahead 3-0 at the break.
McCarty would add a second in the 51st minute and the Red Bulls would go on to score three more goals from three second-half substitutes to finish the rout of NYCFC, leaving no doubt about which team rules New York.
The seven-goal victory tied the MLS record for largest margin of victory.
The Red Bulls beat out the Portland Timbers, FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake for SBI Team of the Week honors.
