Toronto FC holds a one-goal advantage after securing a win in the Canadian Championship first leg on Tuesday night at BMO Field.

Sebastian Giovinco fired in the game’s only goal in TFC’s 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps. The game marks TFC’s first appearance in a Canadian Championship final since 2014.

Giovinco’s goal came just before halftime, as he darted across the field before launching a shot from about 20 yards out. The Italian’s effort took a massive deflection, leaving goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi stranded.

Both teams played rather strong lineups, with TFC featuring Giovinco, Drew Moor and Steven Beitashour, while Vancouver’s starting team was a bit more rotated but still included Octavio Rivero, Kendall Waston and Pedro Morales. 15-year-old Alphonso Davies started for the Whitecaps, playing 67 minutes in his debut.

TFC and the Whitecaps will meet again on June 29 at BC Place in Vancouver, as the home side looks to reverse their first leg fortunes.
