Sunday’s win against the Seattle Sounders wasn’t the most attractive performance from the New York Red Bulls, but a gritty effort from one of the team’s attackers ensured the three points.
Mike Grella provided the Red Bulls with a pair of finishes against the Sounders, earning the midfielder honors as SBI MLS Player of the Week.
Despite seeing the Sounders take it to the home side at times throughout the match, Grella made his mark at the most critical junctures. The 29-year-old opened the scoring in the 18th minute, after positioning himself in the right spot when Sacha Kljestan’s effort struck the post. Grella then doubled the score in the second half, darting behind the Sounders backline and cleverly chipping Stefan Frei.
The midfielder’s game-winning efforts were enough to earn SBI MLS Player of the Week honors ahead of Sporting KC’s Benny Feilhaber, Colorado Rapids forward Kevin Doyle and Kelyn Rowe of the New England Revolution.
What did you think of Grella’s performance? Which player stood out the most to you over the weekend?
