Just days after news of the move first surfaced, the LA Galaxy have officially acquired the rights to Jermaine Jones.
The Galaxy announced the move via trade from the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, hours after unveiling Curt Onalfo as their new head coach. In exchange for the 35-year-old midfielder, the Rapids received the Galaxy’s highest first-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft as of 24 hours prior to the draft.
While the Galaxy have acquired Jones’ MLS rights, a contract still needs to be agreed upon if he is to play for them next season. Jones will be a free agent at the end of this year when his current deal expires, and can sign with any non-MLS team if he so wishes. He said after the Rapids’ postseason elimination last month that he was seeking a Designated Player offer.
The U.S. Men’s National Team regular has made 47 league appearances since coming to MLS in 2014, and contributed three goals and two assists for the Rapids this season. He has long been interested in a move to Los Angeles, where his family has lived for a number of years.

DP’s like Giovinco or Diego Valeri–guys who are in the prime of their career. I guess they didn’t agree with me
Is JJ really worth a “Designated Player” salary and roster spot at this point?
He’s played a total of 37 regular season club matches over the past 3 years (36.3%)
Hard to shell out DP money for someone who’s played just over 1/3 the matches over the past 3 yrs and is 35 yrs old w/ a history of injury issues..
if he was a true european (like lampard or gerrard) the fans would be up in arms about (potentially) giving a 37 year old a DP deal… but since he’s a USMNT fans look the other way.

He’ still very good when he’s on the field. Problem that seems to happen less and less every year.
