The LA Galaxy has concluded their search for a new head coach with the selection of Curt Onalfo as Bruce Arena’s replacement.

Onalfo was announced as the club’s ninth head coach in a press conference on Tuesday.

The 47-year-old Brazilian-born former U.S. international was the front-runner for the Galaxy job since Arena left to manage the U.S. Men’s National Team late last month.

Onalfo served as Arena’s assistant in L.A. from 2011 to 2014 before taking charge of the club’s reserve team, LA Galaxy II, in the USL, where Los Dos went 41-25-20 during the regular seasons under him.

Prior to that, Onalfo held two MLS coaching gigs as he was formerly at the helm for the Kansas City Wizards from 2007-09 and D.C. United in 2010. He went 27–29–22 with Kansas City and 3-12-3 with D.C.

The University of Virgina graduate beat out other candidates likes former Seattle Sounders boss Sigi Schmid and Columbus Crew’s Gregg Berhalter, according to reports.

  1. Did anyone actually watch the Galaxy press conference announcing Onolfo yesterday? Klein, Onolfo, Vagenas, they all had their ties half done, collars askew, all of them unshaven… they looked like they’d all just come back from a bender in Vegas.

  2. Wow! I applaud LA’s commitment to an ‘organization man’ but this is underwhelming for a club like the Galaxy. Let’s not forget Onalfonplayed for Arena and is buds with Gulati.

I will have liked to have seen them go completely off their t!ts and hire someone like Roy Keane! What a circus that would be.

  3. As a DCUnited fan, I was very glad to see Onalfo leave Washington and am nearly as happy to have him land the LA job. I hope he is every bit as effective a leader in LA as Ruud Gullit.

Actually, I think the team really under-performed for Onalfo in Washington and expect that he’ll have a lot more success in LA.

  4. Not exactly a stellar record in his previous coaching gigs, but I’ll trust the LAG organization and what they have seen in him over the past 5 years.
