Landon Donovan shocked many when he announced he would return to the LA Galaxy for the MLS season’s stretch run. However, it appears that return will be fairly short-lived.

According to Sports Illustrated, Donovan is unlikely to return to the Galaxy next season. The club is reportedly not set to offer Donovan a Designated Player deal as the team begins what is expected to be a major rebuild.

Should he leave the Galaxy, Donovan would join Bruce Arena, Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard as big names that have exited the club in recent weeks. Due to the departures, the Galaxy have two DP slots open, while the club continues its search to replace Arena as head coach following his appointment as U.S. Men’s National Team manager.

Donovan made six regular season appearances after signing with the Galaxy in September, scoring one goal during his stay. In the postseason, Donovan featured in three matches and added an assist as the Galaxy fell to the Colorado Rapids in penalty kicks in the Western Conference semifinals.

  1. A little unfinished business in SJ?

He’s close to Kinnear and Wondo…short flight home.

That would add a little spice to the Cali Clasico…haha.

He’d be the perfect set up man for Wondo.

    • I expect him to stay in the game for a chance at a NT role under Bruce, although whether that callup will or should happen is another question (I expect a camp cupcake call if he is willing but would he really help in a Hex game…..). The two destinations that would make sense would be LAFC and SJ, but LAFC won’t be open for business in 2017.

No disrespect, but this is absurd on so many levels.

He’s DONE! If he’s called up, that is a bigger indictment of the lack quality of the USMNT. USMNT just need help in center midfield – he can’t help.

  2. It was such a desperate move. He played fine, eventually, but they had no prayer of winning the league. At least they tried.

LA is in a world of hurt for next year. They got rid of dead weight like Gerrard, but they will have a brand new team, essentially starting over.

    • LA needed to blow that team up after two years as expensive also rans. However, if you know the history, you know that LA was initially a mess in the first Beckham years until Arena was summoned. You already see where money alone doesn’t win, and will they be better under less experienced and adept leadership?
