While Chelsea and Liverpool face bottom of the table opposition, a pair of top five teams clash in one Manchester stadium, while the other remains empty as its residents face a difficult visit to top-half opposition.
Manchester City and Tottenham pick up the slack left by the Blues and Reds as they clash at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon. The top five showdown comes just after City suffered a debilitating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Everton last weekend, leaving them grasping at straws to fix their woes and keep their tenuous grip on a title race that’s slipping away rapidly. Tottenham enter on the back of their own 4-0 result, a victory in this case, over a West Brom side that is no pushover. The Spurs take over second place, a distant seven points behind Chelsea, as they seek to continue their upward trend.
Meanwhile, Old Trafford will remain empty this weekend as Manchester United face a difficult visit to Stoke City. While it won’t be too cold or rainy, Stoke will certainly prove difficult to overcome anyway, coming off a 3-1 thrashing of Sunderland and currently sitting in the top half of the table. United have battled themselves back into a better situation than they found themselves in a few months ago, sitting in sixth and just two points behind their cross-town rivals.
Arsenal also face a potentially challenging foe, as they welcome Burnley to the Emirates. The Gunners enter on yet another 4-0 result from last week, theirs a comprehensive victory over the hapless Swansea City, leaving them fourth in the table, just one point behind Liverpool and bitter rivals Tottenham. Burnley enter on a nice 1-0 victory of their own over Southampton, not an easy feat, and find themselves in the top half as well.
Here’s the full slate of this weekend’s Premier League matches:
MANCHESTER CITY VS. TOTTENHAM (SATURDAY, 12:30 P.M. ET, NBC SPORTS LIVE EXTRA)
Injuries of Note: For Manchester City, they’ll still have to deal with the extended absence of Ilkay Gundogan with his season-ending knee injury, as well as the continued suspension of Fernandinho. Tottenham will be without Jan Vertonghen, who could miss up to 10 weeks with his ankle injury, as well as Erik Lamela, who continues to struggle with his hip.
Key to Game: City have been woeful of late, not least due to their lackluster attack. Sergio Aguero has struggled in big matches recently and needs to round back into form if City want to avoid slipping out of the title race for good, and perhaps even Champions League qualification. Tottenham will hope the absence of Vertonghen won’t allow Aguero to have a resurgence.
Player to Watch: Eric Dier could find himself pushed back into a centerback role with the absence of Vertonghen, less preferred but not unfamiliar, and will have to cope with what remains a very talented City attack. His slotting in effectively will be key to keeping City down and allowing Tottenham to escape with a win.
Quote: “Tottenham are a good team,” Pep Guardiola stated. “They are really playing good. As a fan of football, I love to see them. They are brilliant. It is the third season there; they play how (Mauricio Pochettino) wants.”
STOKE CITY VS. MANCHESTER UNITED (SATURDAY, 10:00 A.M. ET, NBCSN)
Injuries of Note: Stoke will be without a litany of players, as Geoff Cameron, Jack Butland, Stephen Ireland, Mame Diouf, Wilfred Bony, Jonathan Walters, and Ramadan Sobhi will all be out, with Bojan Krkic potentially active as he continues to recover from his hip injury. United will be without Eric Bailly and James Wilson.
Key to Game: Stoke have been solid at home, winning more than they lose, but United have been very strong on the road, with six wins and two draws in ten matches. United’s defense has been one of the best this season, allowing less than a goal per game, so Stoke will need to find a way to score, preferably early as falling behind could allow United to close up shop and wait them out.
Player to Watch: Zlatan Ibrahimovic was recently named the Premier League player of the month thanks to a series of stellar performances. If Stoke want to stop United, they’ll have to start with stopping Ibra.
Quote: “It’s a game we can enjoy; we worked hard last weekend and got our rewards so we’ll have to replicate that,” said Stoke manager Mark Hughes. “They’ll test us, clearly, they’re a top quality side who are playing well at the moment after having their own problems initially and they seem to have got their act together.”
ARSENAL VS. BURNLEY (SUNDAY, 9:15 A.M. ET, NBCSN)
Injuries of Note: Arsenal will be missing Per Mertesacker, Mathieu Debuchy, Mohamed Elneny, and Santi Corzola, while Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud are both 50/50 with slight injuries, and Keiran Gibbs, Francis Coquelin, and Hector Bellerin are expected to play. Burnley will be without Kevin Long, while Dean Marney, Scott Arfield, and Johann Gudmundsson will likely play despite knocks.
Key to Game: While Burnley has one of the best home records in the league at 8-1-3 (W-D-L), they’ve been woeful on the road, and remain the only team yet to win away from their own ground while scoring a meager three goals in nine matches. They’ll need to find some way, any way, to break through at the Emirates, or they could be in for a long day against one of the most prolific teams in the league.
Player to Watch: With one goal in five straight matches, as well as two assists, Oliver Giroud has been absolutely on fire and Arsenal have ridden him to a fantastic run of form, winning four and drawing once in that span. If Burnley can’t stop him, this match will be over as soon as it starts.
Quote: “They are a top-10 team in the first part of the league,” Arsene Wenger said, “so what they have done is absolutely unbelievable so we have to make sure they do not find a solution away from home on Sunday because it is a big game for us and we have to prepare well. Even away from home recently they were a bit unlucky in some games.”
