Ronald Koeman’s departure as FC Barcelona manager has left a cloud of uncertainty surrounding the players he helped bring to the Camp Nou, and while Sergiño Dest has been one of the teams few bright spots, interested clubs could see an opportunity to pry away the American fullback.
Chelsea is reportedly just such a team, with Dest linked to interest from the reigning Champions League titleholders, according to a report by Catalonian outlet El Nacional.
A Chelsea-Dest connection makes sense given Dest’s qualities and his suitability to play as a right wingback in Thomas Tuchel’s system. The Blues currently boast Reece James in the role as the team’s only pure right wingback, with Cesar Azpilicueta also used in the role on occasion.
Dest is also versatile enough to play on the left side as well, which makes him an even more valuable target.
The 21-year-old — who celebrated his birthday on Wednesday — isn’t believed to be interested in moving away from the Camp Nou, but given Barcelona’s financial struggles, and Chelsea’s financial muscle, a transfer wouldn’t exactly be impossible to pull off. According to El Nacional, Barcelona would be willing to sell Dest for 35 million Euros, with Chelsea reportedly willing to spend 25 million Euros to bring Dest to Stamford Bridge in January.
Dest joined Barcelona from Ajax in a 20-million Euro transfer in the summer of 2020, choosing the Catalan club over a move to Bayern Munich, another team that has reportedly been linked to still having interest in the Dutch-born USMNT defender.
A move to Chelsea could unite Dest with USMNT teammate Christian Pulisic, who just returned to action after a lengthy stint on the sidelines due to an ankle injury suffered in September’s World Cup qualifying.
Dest is set to rejoin the USMNT for its upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Mexico (November 12) and Jamaica (November 16).
