Zack Steffen’s future with Manchester City has been extended for an additional two years.
Man City announced Thursday that Steffen has signed a new contract with the club, extending his stay until June 2025. Steffen is in his second season with the Citizens after spending the 2019-20 campaign on loan at German club Fortuna Dusseldorf.
“This is a fantastic moment me – I am so happy to be committing my future to Manchester City,” Steffen said in a club interview. “In my opinion, this is the best team in world football, with the best manager and best coaching setup. It’s a privilege to be here and contribute to this team achieving its targets.
“I feel I learn every day and I have definitely improved as a goalkeeper since coming here. I contributed to our success last season, which was an amazing experience. I want to keep pushing Ederson every single day and take my chances when they arrive.”
The 26-year-old has made 16 combined appearances with the Citizens since his arrival from the Columbus Crew in 2019. Steffen helped the Citizens capture the 2020 English League Cup after posting a clean sheet in the tournament’s final against Tottenham.
Seven of Steffen’s 16 appearances for Man City have come in the League Cup, while he’s also appeared in the UEFA Champions League and English Premier League on minimal occasions. He’s kept eight clean sheets during his time in Manchester and has continued to fight for the consistent No. 1 job with the U.S. men’s national team.
“Zack is an excellent goalkeeper and a brilliant professional who brings so much to Pep’s squad,” City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said. “He fits the blueprint of what a Manchester City goalkeeper should be. Not only is great with his hands, but he is also calm on the ball and provides outstanding distribution, which is a vital part of our style.
“This is a man who trains to an exceptionally high standard every single day. He always wants to learn and improve. Our coaching staff love having him here and we want to see him continue his development over the next years. Everyone at Manchester City is delighted Zack is staying with us and we will him the very best during his time here.”
The Pennsylvania native was recently called into Gregg Berhalter’s 25-player roster for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Mexico and Jamaica later this month.
