Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Wright, Weah, and more

Haji Wright’s stellar surge of goals for Antalyaspor continued on Sunday with the in-form American striker playing a key role in a 4-2 road win over Kasimpasa.

Wright scored once and also assisted once as Antalyaspor extended its unbeaten run to 10 matches in league play. The 24-year-old now has 14 goals and two assists for Nuri Sahin’s side this season, continuing to improve his stock for possible involvement in the USMNT June schedule. Wright needed only 19 minutes to help Antalyaspor take an early advantage on the road on Sunday. After picking up possession on the left wing, Wright raced upfield before delivering a deadly cross into the box for Fredy to slam home.

Wright’s pressure in the 53rd minute paid off as Erdem Canpolat’s attemped clearance deflected off of the striker. Wright slotted into the empty net, giving Antalayspor a 3-1 lead in the early moments of the second-half. The former Schalke striker finished the match with three completed dribbles, six of 10 duels won, and one tackle won, delivering impressive moments on both sides of the field.

Antalyaspor concludes its Super Lig schedule on May 22 at home against Galatasaray, knowing a victory would propel it over the 60-point plateau this season.

In France, Timothy Weah scored his first Ligue 1 goal of the season in a Man of the Match performance for Lille. Erik Palmer-Brown started for Troyes, but could not help the French club avoid a home loss to Lens.

In England, Christian Pulisic played 105 minutes for Chelsea, but ended up on the losing end of Saturday’s FA Cup Final vs. Liverpool.

In Austria, Brenden Aaronson came off of the bench to help Red Bull Salzburg claim a 1-0 road win. Ulysses Llanez scored two goals and added one assist in SKN St. Poelten’s victory.

Elsewhere, John Brooks played 90 minutes in Wolfsburg’s 2-2 Bundesliga finale draw with Bayern Munich. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s Stuttgart fought to clinch its spot in the Bundesliga for another season. • Hmm well let’s see
Sabbi 3g 4a in 29 league appearances in a league rated below MLS by multiple sites. That isn’t good enough to beat out his position group of Reyna, Aaronson, Pulisic, Weah. It’s not good enough to beat out second tier guys like Morris, Roldan and Arriola that put up far better numbers in MLS. When you consider Hoppe, Giaocchini played wing this Summer plus Llanez and Konrad, he’s not even in the top 10.

      • Yes, and Wright had done nothing with his potential until this season, really the last few months. His assist was nice, much better than the goal, but pressing like that on the goal will help with Berhalter. As far as Sabbi, JR said it all.

  1. Great weekend for the guys, if Pulisic could have put one in it would have been even better. Uly with 2g and an assist, Timo Richie, Haji, Cappis (Thurs) and Sabbi score as well. Luca, Hoppe, Marsch in trouble and Tanner, Busio, Green, Tillman, Josh, and Jose Gallegos going down puts a damper on it some.
