The 2022 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 is set with two of MLS’ top title contenders squaring off in the headlining tie at Dignity Health Sports Park.

LAFC will visit rivals L.A. Galaxy in the most intriguing matchup from Thursday’s draw which featured 13 MLS clubs, two USL Championship sides, and one USL League One club. It will be the second of three meetings between the two Western Conference rivals, with the winners also playing host during June’s quarterfinal round.

In a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference semifinal playoff showdown, NYCFC will take on the New England Revolution at Belson Stadium in Queens, New York. It will also be the first of three meetings between the two clubs, after both cruised to Round of 32 wins on Wednesday night.

A pair of Florida rivals will also meet in the Round of 16 as Orlando City hosts Inter Miami in the first head-to-head meeting this year. Oscar Pareja’s side edged past the Philadelphia Union 2-1 on Tuesday while Inter Miami defeated USL League One visitors South Georgia Tormenta FC 3-1 on Wednesday.

USL League One side Union Ohama will hit the road for a Round of 16 showdown with Minnesota United, looking to keep their Cinderella run going. Sacramento Republic will play host to the San Jose Earthquakes next week while Louisville City welcomes Nashville SC to Lynn Family Stadium.

The Round of 16 schedule will take place between May 24-25.

  1. I would rather it be whole nation completely random, but in a way I like the regional because the rivals always face each other.
Could easily have NY-NY and San Jose vs Galaxy next round.
