In last year’s UEFA Europa League crusade, Eintracht Frankfurt proved to be up to the challenge of taking down a Spanish giant, and has the opportunity to shock the world again in the Super Cup on Wednesday.
Last year, Frankfurt beat Barcelona in the quarterfinals in route to lifting its first European trophy in over 30 years and earned the right to take on reigning Champions League winner Real Madrid for one of the biggest games in club history.
Obviously, last year’s Barcelona is a much different task than this year’s Real Madrid, but the memeorable triumph should serve as a motivator that the upset is possible.
MLS All-Star week in Minnesota also takes place this week, where Wednesday’s match between the league and Liga MX’s all-stars headlines the action. Tuesday’s skills challenge should also make for some fun viewing with a shooting, touch, cross and volley, passing, and crossbar challenge on the docket.
The Women’s U-20 World Cup also kicks off this week, and the U.S. youth square off with Ghana in its tournament opener on Thursday. The Americans are looking for a fourth-ever title, and have a tough road with defending champion Japan as an opponent in the group stage.
