The 2023 Leagues Cup will feature a new format with all 47 MLS and Liga MX clubs taking part in the tournament next summer.

The annual competition will run from July 21 to August 19, in which both MLS and Liga MX will pause their respective seasons. Both of the tournament finalists, including the third-place finisher will clinch berths into the 2024 Concacaf Champions League.

Both the 2022 MLS Cup winners and the Liga MX club with the most combined points accumulated across both the 2022 Clausura and Apertura tournaments will begin involvement in the Round of 32.

Each club that takes part in the group stage will play a minimum of two matches, with the top-two finishers advancing into the knockout stage. The knockout round will be single-game elimination format and will run from the Round of 32 all the way through to the tournament final on Aug. 19.

There will be no ties in group stage play with each team earning one point if the result is level after 90 minutes. The winner of the subsequent penalty shootout will receive one additional point, and regulation victories are worth three points.

Liga MX clubs have won both of the previous Leagues Cup tournaments with Seattle Sounders falling to Club Leon in the 2021 edition. Several MLS clubs took part in Leagues Cup matches in 2022 including LAFC, L.A. Galaxy, FC Cincinnati, and Nashville SC.

  1. If you fall out in the group stage you’ve got a long time to practice getting better! Looks like it would be three weeks at least without a match. I don’t care if it’s a money grab and there’s no tradition it should be fun.
