USMNT vs. Iran: SBI Match Night

DOHA, Qatar — The U.S. men’s national team will be playing for its World Cup survival tonight in Tuesday’s Group B finale against Iran (2 p.m., FOX).

The Americans will secure a place in the World Cup Round of 16 with a victory, but anything less than a win will see the Americans head home early. The Iranians would secure a knock-out round place with a win, but can also advance with a draw if England beats or ties Wales, and will look to duplicate their World Cup win of 1998 when they face the favored Americans.

Gregg Berhalter has made just two changes from the lineup that started against England, with Cameron Carter-Vickers set to make his World Cup debut in place of Walker Zimmerman, while Josh Sargent returns to the starting lineup after being in the lineup for the group-stage opener against Wales.

SBI will be providing live commentary on tonight’s match so feel free to follow along with us, and as always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action.

  1. Heroic performance from the USMNT, claiming a 1-0 victory and advancing to the Round of 16. The Netherlands will oppose the Americans on Saturday after winning Group A over Senegal. Tyler Adams and Yunus Musah stood out for the USMNT once again in midfield, Sergino Dest and Antonee Robinson did well in their roles, and Walker Zimmerman came on to head literally everything away from Matt Turner’s net. Christian Pulisic played the hero with the biggest goal of his international career to date. Thanks for joining us and be sure to check out out postmatch content tonight and this week!

    • Crazy about why Wright looks brutal. I have watched him with his club and he is very dangerous. If Sargent can’t go against Holland I don’t know if Wright should be the starter.

    • yeah iran might ease back up end of the first but this will be a battle for most or all of the second, until their tank empties.

  2. they’ll come with everything first 10-20 minutes while as fresh as they will be, need to weather that and work hard obviously and maybe will be an opportunity to look for the break without having to lose shape or push numbers to do it as they stretch forward

    maybe sub for CP?

  3. It’s halftime- Sub on BA for CP move Weah to LW. We keep our intensity plus keep pressure on Iran’s back line. I hope we don’t jeopardize our best player when we are in the lead with quality on the bench. Gio gettin a half wouldn’t be a bad thing either. Come on USA, let’s finish strong!

  4. The #USMNT come OH so close to a second goal just before halftime, but have Tim Weah’s would-be finish negated by an OFFSIDE call.

    HALFTIME- USA 1, Iran 0.

The Americans dominated that half. Wasn’t even close. That said, they need an insurance goal for some breathing room. We saw against Wales what can happen when you just have a one-goal lead.

  5. HT: Iran 0 – USMNT 1. Christian Pulisic’s opener has the Americans on verge of advancing to the Round of 16. A great team goal set up by Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest allowed Pulisic to pounce in the box. Can the USMNT hang on? Iran will need to open up in the second half.

  6. i feel like they want too wide and clean a shooting window. weah had one where he went high and it’s like why not try some low shot pinball through a bunch of legs in the 6 yard box. some of the others it’s like take that first time. you can’t always wait for a trap and the ball just so, bring it down, let them recover.

  7. Great to see Pulisic come back on. Looks like he took a shot to the groin, which would explain the delay in recovering, but he’s fine now.

Can the USMNT find a second before halftime? They have Iran on the ropes.

  8. not meaning to be difficult ives but that header back into the middle is a “9 ball” and as with what i was saying about cuba look how a nominal far side player is in the 6 to get the score, not sargent who is 5-10 yards behind the play. i like sargent but his value is showing out of the middle and combining further out in the 18 or final third, then spinning off that and re-combining. a lot of it has to do with when we get lazy and just hit flag crosses. i wish we wouldn’t in which case maybe his value goes up.

  9. GOAL USMNT and it’s Christian Pulisic with the opening goal. Raced in to finish off the Sergino Dest cross. Excellent pass from Weston McKennie to find Dest on the right wing.

That goal was coming, now IRan will have to open up, and expose their defense more. Good for the USA.

    1-0, USA, 43rd minute.

  10. The Americans are still searching for the elusive goal, and are wasting control of this first half. They are also earning corner kicks, but not turning them into good chances.

    0-0, 36th minute.

  11. c’mon coach how hard is it to get someone in the middle on the end of all this, should have learned sargent isn’t a target dude or box poacher about 3 years ago

      • you want guys out there with some athleticism where they can deal with the degree of accuracy of the crosses. now if they will feed sargent to feet like the last 5 minutes then ok. but you need a 9 for how they actually play and how accurate they are being and not how precise i wish they were, or even reyna might be.

    • i mean did the coach not watch that cuba blowout where mckennie repeatedly got weak side garbageman goals on balls that went by sargent in the middle. he’s not brian mcbride, he’s not got the foot speed to run after slightly wayward crosses behind the defense. he needs balls to feet.

  12. 15th minute – Still 0-0. The USMNT have settled well and are bossing the game at the moment. They look a step quicker and better on the ball than the Iranians. Can they do something with that control though?

  13. if/when does GB go with the high pressure? depending on how things develop, maybe 20-25 minutes in? never? we’ll know soon enough

have to get through the first high emotions minutes or best case, use them to our advantage

    we’ll see

  14. I would have started Zimmerman who has looked strong in the first 60-70 minutes of the games and made a planned sub at 60 min. There is a reason Zimmerman was starting ahead of CCV and unless CCV has looked especially strong in training, I would not have made the change.
Sargent/Wright/Ferreira I don’t think there is a clear choice there so sure whoever.
