Joel Sonora joined Portuguese club Maritimo with hopes of earning a consistent first team role, but now the American midfielder will be searching for a new opportunity elsewhere.

C.S. Maritimo has released Sonora from his contract by mutual consent, the club announced Tuesday. Sonora, who signed a three-year contract with the club back in August, made only six appearances for the Portuguese Primeira Liga side.

The 26-year-old previously was under contract with Argentinian side Banfield from July 2021 to August 2022. Sonora made 18 appearances for Banfield while also being loaned to Velez Sarsfield, Arsenal de Sarandi, and Talleres de Cordoba.

Sonora logged 114 combined appearances during his time in Argentina, scoring nine goals and adding 10 assists.

A former U.S. Under-20 youth national team player, Sonora last represented his country in 2015 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He helped the Americans reach the quarterfinals at that competition before suffering elimination to Serbia.

Maritimo sits second from bottom in the Portuguese top flight, earning only six points from the opening 13 matches of the league season.

  1. Fortunate or Unfortunate? Not sure about his contract situation but his brother i think has a bit of an anchor to it. I think Alan has a $20 million fee and pretty much limits his ability to leave his Argentine club. MLS would be an option for both but 20 mil for Alan is way to high
