Austin FC will have a new sporting director heading into the 2023 MLS season while from director Claudio Reyna steps into a new role with the Western Conference club.

Reyna will remain with the club, but transition into a technical advisor role, Austin FC announced Thursday. Head coach Josh Wolff will also serve as Austin FC’s interim chief soccer officer while director of player personnel Sean Rubio has been promoted to interim sporting director.

Reyna’s role change comes during U.S. Soccer’s ongoing investigation of former U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter. Both Reyna and his wife Danielle released statements regarding Berhalter’s past actions, as well as their support for their son Gio, following a limited role at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“I am grateful that Anthony and the organization have given me the opportunity to scale back my role and responsibilities while continuing to contribute to the success of a club that I love,” Reyna said in a statement. “I take great pride in what we have accomplished but am looking forward to a less all-consuming work pace that still permits me to assist ongoing club development.”

Reyna has served as Austin FC’s sporting director since November 2019 helping the club rebound from a struggling debut MLS campaign in 2021. Reyna and Wolff played leading roles as Austin FC reached the Western Conference Finals in 2022, falling to eventual MLS Cup winners, Los Angeles FC.

Austin FC has added veterans Gyasi Zardes and Leo Vaisanen to its squad this offseason as the Western Conference club prepares for Concacaf Champions League involvement, as well as the 2023 MLS regular season. St Louis CITY SC opposes Austin FC in its season-opening match on Feb. 25 before a two-legged CCL showdown with Haitian club Violette AC on March 7 and 14 respectively.

Flashpoint for shenanigans, his son has an anchor on his persona and only performance can lift it. Gio should be fine but Berhalter is out millions and has the series of b.s. following his career.
