West Bromwich Albion’s move up the English Football League Championship table continued Saturday with Daryl Dike sparking Carlos Corberan’s squad to a comeback victory against a promotion rival.

Dike scored his third league goal of the season in West Brom’s 3-2 win over Luton Town at Kenilworth, moving the Baggies to sixth place in the league standings. The U.S. men’s national team striker got the starting nod in place of suspended Brandon Thomas-Asante and made the most of his opportunity.

Despite Luton Town racing out to an early 2-0 advantage, West Brom received a lifeline as Dike scored past USMNT teammate, Ethan Horvath. Dike was played behind the Luton Town backline in the 39th minute and beat Horvath to a loose ball before chipping past the onrushing goalkeeper.

West Brom picked up its pressure in the second half eventually flipped momentum in its favor for good. Jayson Molumby equalized in the 65th minute before Conor Townsend’s close-range finish in the 67th gave the Baggies a 3-2 advantage.

Dike logged 90 minutes in the win, winning five duels, hitting the crossbar once, and drawing one foul. It marked Dike’s latest impressive performance since returning to action for the club.

West Brom has now won four league matches in a row and will host Chesterfield in an FA Cup replay on Tuesday. The Baggies will also visit Championship leaders Burnley on Friday.

      • Also if we shouldn’t count Ferreira’s 4 against Grenada and 2 against TnT (when none of them had played in a year due to Covid) should we count Daryl’s against Martinique? I’m not saying Dike isn’t deserving of opportunities but his resume is a goal against an incredibly uninspired CR team that was literally making sure their coach got fired and a team not recognized by FIFA. His other 300 minutes have been fairly non-memorable. That hasn’t always been his fault and some of those we’re playing hurt.

      • ” his resume is a goal against an incredibly uninspired CR team that was literally making sure their coach got fired and a team not recognized by FIFA.”

There are worse players with better resumes out there.

Ferreira was a complete waste of time and space in Qatar but his resume by Berhalterness standards is pretty good.

The jury is still out on Dike especially if you believe that Gregg is not coming back.

Darryl is a particular type of forward and he has yet to play in a USMNT side that was set up to take advantage of what he does best.

That’s the problem with this cattle call style of capping players. Some players need a little more organization around them than others.

Darryl needs to get his mojo going and then hope that whoever the new manager is that they are looking for a player like him.

If he can get WBA back to the EPL and then have a good run in the EPL, then I’d consider getting more serious about him. That would be more testing than a Nations League or Gold Cup farce.

If we have guys playing in serious competitions, then we should take advantage of that fact, instead ruining them by playing softie CONCACAF teams..
