Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: McKennie, Pulisic, and more

Juventus will aim to be part of the Serie A title race this season and having Weston McKennie regularly in the starting lineup should help with those hopes.

McKennie and his Juventus teammates will face Parma on Sunday in their Serie A opener. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder made a career-high 48 appearances last season, scoring five goals and contributing four assists. Despite being linked at times with an exit from Turin, McKennie played a crucial role in Igor Tudor’s squad during the second half of the season.

The 26-year-old should be fresh and ready to go as the Bianconeri begins their competitive schedule against a Parma side hoping to stay away from the relegation zone. Similar to his club role, McKennie is expecting to play ample minutes for the USMNT this fall, starting with September’s pair of home friendlies.

In England, Brenden Aaronson and Leeds United face Arsenal in Saturday’s final match of the day. Tyler Adams and Bournemouth host Wolves while Josh Sargent seeks to score for the fourth match in a row.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic and AC Milan also kick off Serie A play against Cremonese.

In France, Tim Weah and Marseille face Paris FC. Tanner Tessmann and Lyon take on Metz.

In Germany, Joe Scally and Noahkai Banks begin Bundesliga play.

Elsewhere, George Bello and LASK take on Red Bull Salzburg. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Celtic face Livingston. Griffin Yow and Westerlo face Club Brugge while Marlon Fossey and Standard Liege entertain Cercle Brugge. Rokas Pukstas and Hajduk Split face a stern test against Osijek.

  1. Wright with two goals today.

    Sargent with a goal.

    Both have 3 league goals

I have to say though that Wright is more dynamic at striker. Won’t be surprised if he is the starter in September.

  2. I’M HEARING SOMETHING IN THE PIPELINE:
GIOVANNI REYNA IS GOING TO MONCHENGLADBACH ……FOR 7.5 MILLION EUROS…..AND DORTMUND HOLDS ON TO 15% OF FUTURE SALE OF THE PLAYER.

    LETS GGOOOOOO

  3. Reyna chooses hanging with his homey over Italy.

He’ll be competing with a 31 year old for time at the 10. Maybe not a bad choice. Maybe having an emotional support Scally will help him….

    • REporting from Germany on the decision:
“Gladbach have arranged to acquire Reyna from BVB for a transfer fee totaling €7m including bonuses. The 22-year-old’s chances of breaking into BMG head coach Gerardo Seoane’s XI immediately remain slim as the Foals are well stacked in attack outside the center-forward position. Reyna still appears ready to take his chances.”

Another Nottingham Forrest decision….Arrogance blinding him….

      • I’m already starting to change my mind.

BMG play a 4-3-3… a 10, 6 and 8. Last season the ten position was filled with Plea and Stoeger. (Plea is now covering for the injured Pepi at PSV and will probably do some of Tillman’s job once Pepi returns). Plea played all along the attacking front for BMG…including at the 10. When Plea wasn’t at the 10 it was 31 year old Stoeger. Those two players basically split the time at the 10. At 31 Stoeger can’t do a whole season there anymore. And Stoeger is not a goal threat (more of a playmaker) whereas Plea was. Gio looks will be the Plea replacement. If that is true does that mean he will be on the wing sometimes? In any case a playmaker that can score goals would be an upgrade – especially with Kleindienst out through October at least.

Side bar – funny how much Plea is floating around USMNT players….
