David Wagner enjoyed success during his last spell in the English Football League Championship and is back for another chance at earning promotion to the English Premier League.

Wagner has been named the new manager of Norwich City, the club announced Friday. The 51-year-old will officially start his spell as manager during the Canaries’ third round FA Cup match vs. Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

“This is a very special and proud moment for me,” Wagner said in a club interview. “To be here, back in England, as the head coach of Norwich City is a huge honor. I’m very pleased with what I have seen so far. The facilities at the Lotus Training Centre are top class. We now have to look forward and work extremely hard.”

Wagner, a former U.S. men’s national team player, last served as manager of Swiss Pro League side Young Boys from July 2021 to March 2022. He registered a 19-12-9 record in 40 matches in charge of the Swiss club before being fired with the team sitting in second place.

Wagner’s greatest achievement was not only helping Huddersfield Town gain promotion to the English Premier League in 2017 via the promotion playoffs, but also helping the Terriers fight off relegation that next season. He earned 51 victories in 154 matches in charge of Huddersfield Town before leaving the club in January 2019.

Wagner takes over for Dean Smith, who was fired in December with the club falling in the league standings. Norwich City currently sits 11th in the Championship.

American forward Josh Sargent leads the Canaries with nine league goals this season while Teemu Pukki and Max Aarons remain key contributors in the squad. Norwich City will host Blackburn at Carrow Road on Sunday before visiting Preston North End in league play on Jan. 14.
