Ethan Horvath is only two months into the Rob Edwards-era at Luton Town, but it hasn’t taken long for the American to impress his new boss.
Horvath has continued to lock down the No. 1 goalkeeper spot at Luton Town this season, while on loan from Nottingham Forest. Edwards, who was named manager of the Hatters in mid-November, has won three of his five matches in charge of the English Football League Championship side, with Horvath playing a key role during that stretch.
The 27-year-old has helped keep Luton Town within the promotion playoff places during the early stages of 2023, while also remain alive in the FA Cup competition. Edwards is still fairly new into the job at Kenilworth Road, but supports Horvath to continue playing a key role during the second half of the season.
“I’ve been delighted,” Edwards said about Horvath in his pre-match press conference Thursday. “I had seen lots of good things about him and heard loads of great things, he’s a wonderful human being, and a very talented goalkeeper.
“It was a magnificent, world class save I think the one right at the death [Horvath’s key save vs. Wigan Athletic in a 1-1 FA Cup draw] and he’s a pleasure to work with,” Edwards added. “We’re delighted with his form and hopefully that will continue for the rest of the season.”
Horvath contributed to Nottingham Forest’s promotion back to the English Premier League last season, but it wasn’t enough to keep him in Steve Cooper’s squad this fall or winter. The former Club Brugge and Molde goalkeeper has registered nine clean sheets in 24 league appearances to date, recently helping Luton Town claim three-consecutive wins.
Horvath’s long-term future at Luton Town remains to be seen, with the club sitting in seventh place and among several teams in touching distance of the playoff spots. His future at Nottingham Forest is also undetermined with Cooper’s squad sitting in 15th place and only two points clear of the relegation zone.
Edwards isn’t set to guarantee a long-term future for Horvath at Luton Town, but admits the contributions the U.S. men’s national shot-stopper has made for the club.
“It’s something we’re aware of, we’re aware of his situation as well,” Edwards said about Horvath’s season-long loan. “We know he’s not our player as such, he is but he’s not, so it’s something to look at further down the line, but he’s certainly made a big impact here.”
Luton Town hosts ninth place West Bromwich Albion on Saturday before visiting Wigan Athletic in a third round FA Cup replay next week.
People seem to keep writing him off. Having a really good season. May help Luton to a promotion playoff.
He’s young especially for a keeper. He’s only 27.
Turner is better at the moment.
