Report: Ian Harkes set for sidelines with hamstring injury

Dundee United manager Liam Fox will hope to have every player available if the Tangerines want to avoid relegation from the Scottish Premiership this season, but one key name will reportedly be missing for several weeks.

Ian Harkes left Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Celtic with hamstring discomfort and is now expected to “a number of weeks”, The Courier reported Thursday. The news comes one day after Dundee United lost 1-0 to Kilmarnock in a crucial six-pointer, which kept the Tangerines rooted to the basement of the league table.

There is no timetable for Harkes’ return to action, according to the report.

Harkes is in his third full season with Dundee United and has contributed one goal and one assist in 19 league appearances. The 27-year-old arrived from D.C. United in January 2019 and has since made 154 appearances for the club, helping the Tangerines earn promotion in the 2020-21 campaign.

Harkes’ versatility in midfield has seen him used in a number of roles under Fox since the Scottish manager’s arrival in August 2022.

Dundee United visits third place Hearts on Saturday before a Scottish Cup fifth round home showdown with Kilmarnock on Feb. 11. The Tangerines’ 40 goals conceded in SPFL action are the third-most in the division while their 25 goals scored are the fourth-fewest.
