Bill Hamid was linked with a potential move to Scotland this winter, but has decided to stay in the United States.

Hamid signed with USL Championship side Memphis 901, the club announced Monday. The 32-year-old was not re-signed by D.C. United last offseason and reportedly explored a potential move to Scottish Premiership club Dundee United earlier this year.

“The signing of Bill Hamid will potentially be the greatest signing in club history and certainly one of the biggest in USL,” 901 FC sporting director and former U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper Tim Howard said.

“He comes to 901 FC as he enters the prime of his career,” Howard said. “Bill has a winning pedigree, having lifted trophies domestically and internationally. Most importantly, we believe that his time spent as a member of the USMNT will prove pivotal to our locker room and on-field success.”

Hamid spent 14 years with D.C. United in MLS, totaling over 200 appearances for the Eastern Conference club. He was a part of the D.C. United squad that won the U.S. Open Cup in 2013, and was also MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2014.

He is D.C. United’s all-time leader with 89 shutouts and 976 saves.┬áHamid also spent two seasons with Danish side Midtjylland from 2018-2020 before returning to D.C. United.

He earned eight caps for the USMNT, winning Concacaf Gold Cup titles in 2013 and 2017.

Hamid is set to make his club debut this weekend against Oakland Roots SC.

Mark Birighitti and and Jack Newman have both featured in between the posts for Liam Fox’s squad this season, with Birighitti making 20 appearances to date. The Tangerines are in danger of suffering relegation this season, as they currently sit bottom of the Scottish Premiership table with 20 points earned.

Hamid isn’t expected to be part of the roster until after this weekend’s game against Ross County. Dundee United will also face Aberdeen, St. Mirren, and Rangers in the coming weeks.

    • i was gonna let it slide, but yeah, 3 weeks ago he was rumored to scotland, before this happened. dude was making $700k last year in MLS, you’d think he had to have MLS and scottish nibbles, ends up with the current worst team in the east in second division USL where salaries would have to max out at like $100k or so.
