Americans Abroad Midweek Preview: Cardoso, Adams, and more

Make it seven wins on the spin for Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid are finding their groove at the right time of the European season heading into Tuesday’s La Liga clash with Barcelona. Johnny Cardoso, who was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo, has only just returned to action after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Cardoso played 59 minutes last week in his first start in three months as Atletico Madrid defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in UEFA Champions League play. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder hasn’t had the smoothest transition to the club, but is back and healthy for a crucial part of the season.

Atletico Madrid are three points back of Barcelona heading into Tuesday’s trip to the Camp Nou, a match which could be a springboard for the club in the title race.

In England, Tyler Adams and Bournemouth return home to face Everton. Brenden Aaronson and Leeds United host Chelsea.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic and AC Milan take on Lazio in Coppa Italia play. Weston McKennie and Juventus host Udinese.

In Germany, a trio of former NYCFC players will meet in DFB Pokal play as Joe Scally and Gio Reyna welcome James Sands to town. Malik Tillman and Bayer Leverkusen visit Borussia Dortmund in the competition as well. John Tolkin and Holstein Kiel take a trip to Hamburg.

Elsewhere, Auston Trusty and Celtic host Dundee FC in Premiership play. Dante Polvara and Aberdeen welcome St. Mirren to town. Marlon Fossey, Erik Palmer-Brown and Jonathan Amon are among players in cup competitions in Belgium, Greece, and Denmark respectively.
