Hoffenheim’s fight to escape any relegation worries in the German Bundesliga received a major boost on Saturday with John Brooks leading a strong defensive performance against defending champions Bayern Munich.
Brooks logged 90 minutes as Hoffenheim tied Bayern Munich 1-1 at the Allianz Arena, moving five points clear of the bottom three. The U.S. men’s national team veteran made nine clearances and won three aerial battles in the heart of Hoffenheim’s defense, helping keep the league-leaders at bay. Although Pellegrino Matarazzo’s squad did not walk away with a full three points, a positive performance against Bayern should provide plenty of confidence for Hoffenheim going forward this spring.
Up next for Brooks and Co. is a home league match vs. Cologne on April 22.
In Mexico, Alex Zendejas registered his first brace for Club America in a derby win over Cruz Azul.
In England, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson and Fulham picked up a crucial three points at Everton. Ethan Horvath registered his 19th clean sheet of the EFL Championship season.
In France, Tim Weah logged 45 minutes at right back in Lille’s Ligue 1 victory on Sunday.
In Germany, Gio Reyna scored off the bench for Borussia Dortmund in a 3-3 Bundesliga draw with Stuttgart. John Brooks helped Hoffenheim earn one point at Bayern Munich.
Elsewhere, Mark McKenzie and Genk rolled past Anderlecht 5-2 in Belgium. Ian Harkes assisted once in Dundee United’s important road win over Motherwell.
