Club America’s quest to catch Monterrey in the Liga MX Clausura title race continued Saturday with Alex Zendejas propelling the visitors past local rivals Cruz Azul in a Clasico Joven showdown.

Zendejas scored two goals as Club America defeated Cruz Azul 3-1, moving four points off top spot in the Clausura standings. It was Zendejas’ first multi-goal performance since scoring twice for Zacatepec in March 2018.

Uriel Antuna’s 12th minute goal boosted Cruz Azul in front, but Club America would turn things around with Zendejas sparking the comeback.

Zendejas’ long-range left footed shot nestled into the bottom-right corner on the verge of halftime, tying things up for Club America. Jonathan Rodriguez pass allowed Zendejas to drill a low shot past Cruz Azul goalkeeper -.

Club America took advantage of Michael Estrada’s sending off in the second half with Zendejas delivering his second goal of the match. Henry Martin’s flicked pass allowed Zendejas to stroke home a low shot into the bottom-left corner for a 2-1 Club America lead.

Martin would slam the door shut on any comeback hopes in the 63rd minute, finishing Diego Valdes’ assist into the bottom-right corner.

Zendejas was substituted off in the 78th minute, finishing with two goals, five duels won, one foul drawn, and one tackle completed. It was a stellar performance from the 25-year-old, who now has three goals during the Clausura season.

Club America next hosts Pumas on April 22 before visiting FC Juarez on April 28 to close the month’s schedule.
