Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Horvath, Reyna, and more

It’s been close to 30 years since Luton Town featured in the top-flight of English Football, but that drought could end on Saturday in the English Football League Championship Promotion Final.

Ethan Horvath and the Hatters will face off with Coventry City at Wembley Stadium with Luton Town seeking a first-ever Premier League appearance. The Nottingham Forest loanee has been stellar for Rob Edwards’ squad this season, registering 20 combined clean sheets in league play. Horvath’s loan is set to expire this June, but promotion to the Premier League could play a key role if the 27-year-old potentially earns a permanent move to Luton.

Luton and Coventry tied their two meetings during the regular season, with the Hatters riding a nine-match unbeaten run in the head-to-head matchup.

In Germany, Gio Reyna and Borussia Dortmund face Mainz knowing a victory would clinch them the Bundesliga title. Joe Scally and Borussia Moenchengladbach take on Augsburg.

In England, Weston McKennie, Brenden Aaronson and Leeds United host Tottenham needing a victory to avoid Premier League relegation. Antonee Robinson and Fulham visit Manchester United in their season finale.

In Spain, Yunus Musah and Valencia host Espanyol. Luca De La Torre and Celta Vigo visit Cadiz.

Elsewhere, the Serie B promotion playoffs begin with a trio of Americans fighting to start for Venezia. Matthew Hoppe and Hibernian take on rivals Hearts in their SPFL finale. Johnny Cardoso and Internacional continue Brazilian Serie A play. Ricardo Pepi and FC Groningen host Sparta Rotterdam in their final Eredivisie match.

    • Reyna threw a big baby fit when Weah was going to start in front of him? How do you think he’ll feel if someone who couldn’t hack it in English League One takes his place. Or how Pepi will react when a guy who’s average in Hungary plays ahead of him. How’s Horvath feel when after leading his team to the EPL gets benched for a guy who gave 3.5g per in the CL? How does DeJuan Jones feel after earning his caps that someone who failed in the Dutch 2nd and had to go to the 3rd division gets his spot not because of his play but because of a passport?
