Former USYNT goalkeeper David Ochoa released by Atletico San Luis

David Ochoa’s short time with Mexican club Atletico San Luis has come to an abrupt end.

Ochoa was released from his contract with the Liga MX side on Tuesday, the club announced. The 22-year-old made the move to Mexico last November, but only made one senior appearance for Atletico San Luis and seven appearances for the Under-20 squad.

“As a club, our main objective is to transcend by respecting and putting institutional values first by promoting respect, professionalism, ethics and commitment of all our collaborators, as well as having a positive impact inside and outside the community,” a club statement read.

“We wish David the best of success in his future projects,” the statement concluded with.

Ochoa originally came through the Real Salt Lake academy before breaking into the first team during the 2020-21 MLS season. The former U.S. youth national team player registered six clean sheets in 28 appearances as RSL reached the Western Conference Finals.

However, Ochoa did not earn similar success in 2021-22, missing the first half of the season before being traded to D.C. United in July. Ochoa made nine appearances in Wayne Rooney’s squad before not being re-signed last winter.

Born in California, Ochoa featured for several USYNT squads before committing his future to Mexico. Ochoa has only made one appearance for Mexico’s Under-21 squad though and is still waiting to earn his senior debut under new head coach Diego Cocca.

Atletico San Luis faces Club Leon in its Liga MX Clausura finale on May 6.

  1. Good luck to him. Not the first nor will be the last young player to struggle. I would guess an MLS team will take a chance with him. Tried to push a move away from RSL in the wrong way. Was good for DC before leaving for San Luis. Possible destination may be New England. Petrovic isn’t going to be there long.

  2. i wish the kid well. he raised the issue of depression in his article explaining his NT decision, his mentor had died, and his career has spiraled since then. he had a lot of talent as a shotstopper. the answer to feeling an outsider relative to both here and mexico is probably signing in a third country, at a humble destination that will give him a chance to compete for time, and rebuilding from the ground up. either that or he had a rapport with ramos, go play for hartford. they aren’t very good and they ship a lot of goals but he would be back with a mentor and might be able to walk into a starting job there. and if he plays well enough MLS teams will grab good USL keepers. but i think his better option is probably a “third country.” MX is a tough league. MLS ain’t too shabby either. a bad USL team is probably a lousy platform.

personally i was uncomfortable with the nationality decisionmaking process described in his article because it came across as driven by emotions and recent loss.

    • I’m not sure what the rush was for him to be making permanent decisions so early in his development. He wasn’t close to stepping into a starting role with either nation. Still a very young keeper Plenty of time to find his feet- get his head right.
