Gooch, Horvath, Steffen advance to EFL Championship promotion playoffs

The English Football League Championship schedule concluded on Monday with three American players clinching their spots into this month’s promotion playoffs.

Lynden Gooch, Ethan Horvath, and Zack Steffen will all take part in the upcoming semifinal matchups, which kick off on May 13 and 14. Steffen and Horvath came into Monday’s final regular season matchday with berths already clinched, but Gooch and Sunderland guaranteed their playoff berth after a 3-0 triumph at Preston North End.

The Black Cats earned promotion back to the Championship last spring and have a great opportunity to get themselves back into the Premier League this time around. Gooch, 27, has made 30 league appearances for Sunderland this season, fighting off a midseason injury to feature down the final stretch of matches.

Sunderland will visit Horvath and Luton Town in the two-legged semifinal round. The two clubs tied 1-1 on both occasions this regular season.

Horvath did not feature in Luton’s 0-0 draw with Hull City on Monday but is expected to return for this weekend’s first leg trip to the Stadium of Light. The 27-year-old Nottingham Forest loanee has been sensational this season, registering 19 clean sheets in 44 league appearances.

Steffen made one save in Middlesbrough’s 1-1 draw with Coventry City on Monday, sealing a fourth place finish. Michael Carrick’s squad will now meet the Sky Blues twice over the next two weeks for a spot in the promotion final on May 27.

The 28-year-old Steffen has made nine clean sheets in 42 appearances for Middlesbrough while on loan from Manchester City.

Coventry City defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 in league play last October.

Burnley and Sheffield United have already clinched automatic promotion back to the Premier League earlier this spring.

  1. Good luck to all 3, maybe some ones club makes it back to the EPL. We’ll know sooner if Coventry City loses to Boro.

    • The way this season has gone for Americans abroad I feel either Coventry wins the playoff or either Luton or Middlesbrough win but don’t purchase or aren’t able to extend the loans of their GK.
