Club Leon defeats LAFC to win Concacaf Champions League Final

The Concacaf Champions League trophy is headed back to Liga MX after Club Leon defeated Los Angeles FC 1-0 on Sunday and 3-1 on aggregate in the tournament’s final.

Lucas Di Yorio’s first-half goal was all Club Leon needed to claim a first CCL title in club history. Veteran goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota made three saves to earn a second-leg clean sheet at BMO Stadium.

After missing attempts from Denis Bouanga and Aaron Long, Club Leon made LAFC pay with the opening goal in the 20th minute. Di Yorio’s close-range effort was slotted home after LAFC’s defense slacked in their race to get back into their own box.

Bouanga’s long-range shot later in the half was easily gathered by Cota, who had little to do in the opening 45 minutes.

LAFC continued to pick up their offensive pressure in the second half with Kwadwo Opoku and Timothy Tillman both registering shots on goal. However, Cota made a pair of key saves to register the road clean sheet and cap off a strong defensive performance from Nicolas Larcamon’s squad.

It was LAFC’s second CCL finals loss in club history after losing to Tigres in 2020.

LAFC resumes MLS play on June 7 against the Houston Dynamo while Club Leon enters its offseason on a major high note.
