The 2022 U.S. Open Cup semifinals are set with four MLS clubs fighting to lift the tournament’s trophy come September.
Thursday’s draw concluded with FC Cincinnati hosting Inter Miami and Real Salt Lake visiting the Houston Dynamo in two All-MLS matchups. Only Houston has lifted the U.S. Open Cup in the tournament’s history, with FC Cincy, Inter Miami, and Real Salt Lake all seeking to do so for the first time.
FC Cincinnati used a dominant second-half performance to defeat Pittsburgh Riverhounds 3-1 at TQL Stadium on Tuesday. Pat Noonan’s squad have also eliminated Louisville City FC, New York City FC, and the New York Red Bulls in this season’s competition.
Inter Miami advanced to the semifinals following a 1-0 road quarterfinal victory over Birmingham Legion FC. The Herons edged Miami FC in penalty kicks in late-April before also eliminating Charleston Battery and Nashville SC in tournament play.
Ben Olsen’s Houston Dynamo defeated the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Sporting KC, Minnesota United, and the Chicago Fire in U.S. Open Cup action this year. The Dynamo have scored four goals in each of their last two cup matches.
Real Salt Lake have scored three goals or more in three of their four U.S. Open Cup matches in 2023. Pablo Mastroeni’s squad defeated Las Vegas Lights, Portland Timbers, and the Colorado Rapids away from home before ousting the LA Galaxy in quarterfinal action on Wednesday night.
The semifinal round will take place on August 23 before the final occurs on September 27.
