Reports: Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion interested in Tyler Adams

Leeds United’s relegation to the English Football League Championship will make it hard for the Yorkshire club to retain several key players and Tyler Adams is reportedly one of them.

Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion are both interested in acquiring Adams this summer, The Athletic and multiple outlets reported Friday. Adams, who missed the final three months of the English Premier League season due to a hamstring injury, also missed U.S. men’s national team duty last week in Concacaf Nations League play.

The 24-year-old suffered his injury in preparation for Leeds’ 4-2 league win over Wolves on March 18 which led to his international absences in the final Nations League group stage window.

Adams joined Leeds United last summer from RB Leipzig and had been one of the club’s top players during a hugely disappointing campaign. He made 26 combined appearances for Leeds United, teaming up with fellow USMNT midfielders Weston McKennie (who has returned to Juventus following his loan spell) and Brenden Aaronson.

Both Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa enjoyed positive EPL campaigns, finishing in the top-half of the league table. The Seagulls finished sixth on 62 points, guaranteeing them a first-ever European qualification spot for next season in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Aston Villa finished one point behind Brighton in seventh place, clinching a spot in the Conference League Qualifying round.

Leeds United opens its EFL Championship schedule on August 4 against Cardiff City.

  1. Obviously, one never knows- no guarantees at that level but… IMHO, the club, manager / style of play and level are a good fit. I hope this pans out and he thrives. Maybe refresh the short memory of all the Leeds fans who’ve suddenly forgotten he was one of the few players on the team that showed up on a consistent basis.

      • The player who ran the most meters in all of the WC. Lazy??? Do you know how many players play in the WC? Do you know how many world class players play in the WC? Captain Adams out ran all of them!!! Most meters run. You changed your name to mysterious, and still have absurd takes. Dest then Jedi were responsible for covering back post. Just like Brooks was responsible for covering the back post v Canada (home) & Honduras (away) 1st window of WCQ. Elitism at its finest. I’m surprised you haven’t been pushing the narrative that McKennie, Adams, & BA suck because they aren’t in the Champions league.

      • US fans have this weird fetish for wanting the big name starters out there every game. this is not how tournament soccer works. adams looked exhausted for holland. they all did. good teams need 20-25 dudes identified where they can rotate people out and adams isn’t on minutes 271-360. maybe he went to sleep. maybe his legs were gone. hence “musah” and “experimentation.” that’s both rest and the ability to make decisions.

i also think people need to realize there is a downside on high energy pressing. i thought wales showed this already. that and i read about “3 year rules” where pressing teams seem to go off a cliff after running hard for a period of time week after week.

      • IV: Given your defensive knowledge do you think Adams runs too much sometimes? Like he rushes into situations others could have covered and thus wears himself out or gets out of position. Musah was able to protect the backline without having to race sideline to sideline making every tackle. Obviously every game is different and instructions change but wondered what others think about that.

      • Adams played very well in the WC until that Netherland’s game. Yes, he could have done better in tracking Depay in the first goal, but I think he was really tired by this time. He had put in so many minutes. If a better overall roster were selected, instead of the usual favorites, it would have provided better depth- so he and a few others like Dest, who did not track well on the second goal, could have rested a bit more.

      • JohnnyR. I played with a guy like that. He ran marathons long before it became a thing and would routinely run 5 miles a day. He figured he could cover the whole field, no problem. Not only did his frequent forays leave holes in the defense, he managed to run himself into the ground halfway through the second half. Distance running is not the same as soccer running (I’ve done both).

      • Both clubs are right fits for Adams. On another note Lyon has entered the Christian Pulisic sweepstakes.
