Inter Miami has already made one major splash this summer with Lionel Messi joining the MLS club and now one of Messi’s former Barcelona teammates will be joining him in Florida.

Sergio Busquets has joined Inter Miami, signing a Designated Player contract through 2025, the Eastern Conference club announced Sunday. Busquets, a one-time FIFA World Cup winner and three-time UEFA Champions League winner, is expected to join the Herons in the coming days.

“This is a special and exciting opportunity that I’m very excited to take. I’m looking forward to this next step in my career with Inter Miami,” said Busquets. “I was impressed by the Club when I came with Barcelona last year and now I’m happy and ready to represent the Club myself. I can’t wait to help bring the success that this ambitious Club strives for.”

Prior to joining Inter Miami, Busquets spent his entire professional career at Barcelona, coming through the renowned academy La Masia and becoming a club legend. He made 721 appearances for Barcelona over the course of 15 seasons, lifting 32 trophies at club level over that span.

Busquets has also earned 143 caps with Spain’s national team, winning the FIFA World Cup in 2010, the European Championship in 2012, and most recently the UEFA Nations League in 2022-23.

He is rejoined with Messi, who he partnered with at Barcelona for majority of their club careers, and current Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino. Martino served as Barcelona manager from July 2013 to May 2014, winning the Supercopa de Espana during that time.

Inter Miami sits last in the Eastern Conference and will open up Leagues Cup play on Friday against Liga MX side Cruz Azul.

    • I imagine Busquets could take the load off of Tata and Messi in terms of helping explain to the rest of the team how best to play with a guy like Leo while probably still being useful on the field.

    • LOL. I was literally googling “AppleTV MLS Season Pass” just this morning myself. Haven’t pulled the trigger yet but I know I’m going to cave. Some things you can’t just not watch even though you know you’re giving the Apple Overlords exactly what they want.
